“So, what’re we gonna do this year to celebrate the fourth?” Dee asked over breakfast.
Ryo looked up from the morning paper, frowning. “I thought we were scheduled to work this year.”
“Yeah, but we drew first shift, we’ll be off at four, and that leaves plenty of time to celebrate in style. I was thinkin’ we could have a barbecue on the roof, and watch the fireworks from there, unless you wanna go to one of big Independence Day events, maybe in the park.”
“Where there’d be hundreds of people milling around, and we’d probably wind up having to arrest a bunch of pickpockets and purse snatchers. Wouldn’t be much of a break from work, would it?”
“Yeah, I hadn’t thought of that.”
“I like your first idea, a rooftop barbecue. We could invite everyone from the building.” Most of their neighbours were getting on in years, and probably wouldn’t have anything exciting planned for themselves.
Dee had been thinking more along the lines of a private party, just the two of them, but he knew his lover liked to treat the neighbours as family, helping out whenever he could.
“Yeah, that could be fun,” he agreed.
“Weather permitting.”
