Moving

Hello all! My boyfriend and I are moving from Philly to the Phoenix/Glendale area this coming summer. I have been looking at houses online and am impressed with what I have seen but am finding it very overwhelming! I started thinking it might be easier to take over someone's lease that way we'll know what kind of renter we're dealing with/etc.

We are looking for a 2 bedroom (second bedroom can be office sized as that's what we plan to use it for) house which accepts cats and dogs and would prefer something with a small yard if possible. A garage is a bonus but not required.

Anyone on here looking to pass on a lease on a place similar to this? We don't have an exact move date yet but we are moving around end of July.

Any tips/advice/etc would be appreciated as well.

And while I'm at it I am a biological anthropologist currently working in the pharmaceutical industry so if anyone is looking for a hard worker let me know, haha :).

Thank you for your time :)

What to see, sushi, and apartments

I'm going to be in Phoenix next week, Monday through Friday. I'll be staying at the Firesky Resort.

Any must sees? I've never had this much freedom in exploring the area before, as much as I am in love with the place. The only thing I have planned is a day-trip to Sedona via Pink Jeep tours.

What are the best sushi joints around town?

Also, this is slightly off topic, but what are the ranges of pricing for rent in Phoenix for 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments? Is it a good time to be seeking an apartment there? Any areas to avoid?

Thanks for your help!

A question from Portland Oregon....

Hello all. Husband and I currently live in Portland but are thinking of moving to Phoenix. The Problem is, we don't know the area at all. We have never been there but we want to move for his health.
Here are a couple of questions, hope you don't mind....

What areas of Phoenix are low crime/low gang areas? We live in an area where it is not uncommon to hear gunshots every weekend, we would like to leave that behind.

What areas should we stay away from?

What is the job market like for Union Electricians?

What sorts of inexpensive things are there to do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not a Native

Hi guys,

I was hoping you might be able to give me some perspective/advice. I am really interested in moving to Arizona for at least a year or two at some point in my life. My question is: what are some of the nicer areas in the state that aren't outrageously expensive? I'd be looking to get an apartment. I love things like hiking, art, and photography. Currently, I'm working on getting an Art Degree in Boston, MA. I would be interested in any kind of artistic community.

Thanks
Conan

Ideas

Hello. I posted a couple of days ago with questions about the nightlife/craft/art scene in Phoenix. Thanks for the answers. Just a few follow up questions now. Again, answers very much appreciated, you have no idea how little I know about the southwest in general, much less Arizona and its cities.

NUMBER ONE
In May I'll be starting up at one of the local newspapers. I was wondering if anyone could send me some story ideas, I know this sounds contrived, but really, it helps a good deal. What are some of the things in your community that don't get attention that you think needs some? That could be cool people, neat businesses, problems (with anything you can think of (roads, bugs, animals, maybe a house has been robbed continuously)). Anything unique that maybe you'd like to learn more about...I want to explore it not only for myself because I'll be new to the community, but it'll be great for me if I can arrive fully stocked with some good ideas for story writing.

NUMBER TWO
I'm looking for apartments. I've never really had to do this before and am finding out now just what a pain in the ass it is. I'd rather not live in a gated pool community...instead a duplex or fourplex someplace in Tempe or in between Tempe and Scottsdale. Any recommendations...or any private landlords that could pointed out for me? I'm looking to budget myself at no more than $650 a month for rent, to give an idea.

NUMBER THREE
I'm from the east. Is there anything I should be thinking about in regards to my car before moving out there? There isn't some fluke thing like different types of tires or something is there?

Thanks!
Conan

Where to live, what to do

I'm going to be moving to Phoenix after I graduate in May. I'm wondering if anyone had any suggestions of where to live in or around Tempe. I'm into art, crafting, and LPs. So maybe a neighborhood within biking distance from things involving that.

I've never even been to Arizona, so this is going to be a totally new experience for me. I'm not sure how general I should be, so, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

RN Relocating

My mom's best-friend is looking to relocate here from Chicago. Her & her husband are currently visiting and checking out various communities to get an idea of the market.

She is a long time hospice RN (30+ years) . They will likely purchase a home in an area near a hospice where she can gain employment. She had asked my mom & I what we knew about the hospice services in the valley. My mom & I both drew a blank ...

Ideally, she'd like to stay in hospice work and from what I keep hearing about the nursing shortage I don't think she's going to have an issue finding a position ( nursing in general). Has anyone here worked for any hospices in the valley? Good/Bad experiences? Or have you had good/bad experiences with a hospice due to a friend/family member/etc being a patient?

I'm just trying to gain an idea so that I can pass along info to her. Any info is appreciated, thanks!

Travel camper sites.

My boyfriend and I currently live in a travel camper and we plan on staying in it a few more years. Right now we live in Mississippi but as soon as I save a sufficient amount of money we are making the move to Phoenix, Arizona so that he can attend school. I've tried looking for RV/camper sites in that area but it seems like the places I find are more aimed for travellers and we are planning to stay for 2-3 years. Are there sites for people who actually live in their campers? We'd love to find a place you can pay yearly and/or monthly for. Thank you for any help! :)

Banks

You may remember my wife posting a few questions about moving to Phoenix thanks to all who answered.

I now have a question with a little more current interest. What banks have lots of branches in and around Phoenix? I can't find details of branches for some pretty big names such as HSBC. I'm currently with Wachovia and though I'm not panicking, I may be interested in some local alternatives if anyone cares to recommend one?
