Had some health issues (not super dangerous, but needed urgent attention), then took some time off to recuperate. Hinges on this physical laptop are dying so I'll probably want to get it replaced soon (and maybe a different OS, depending on how prevalent the spread of LLM garbage is). Going out of town for a long weekend soon and will not be bringing the janky laptop. Everything's fine, just a little behind on keyboard-requiring things, so there might be a slight backlog of reviews/etc. to catch up on in a week or so, maybe.

Watching the Biggest Fireworks Show of All Time (TM) interspersed with natural lightning definitely brought that line from Quatrevingt-Treize about "Nature says to humankind, 'Behold my work, and yours'" to mind.

While my colleague and I were speaking about Srs Bsnss with our industrial partners last week, we heard a roaring noise outside the window. The 250th anniversary flyover displays by the fighter jets had begun.

We grabbed our hats and sunglasses and went onto the roof to have a closer look.

It ended up being a very close look indeed. (I would like to point out that none of us were the ones clapping.)

This was a more comfortable view of the formation flying.

Here they are coming from t’other direction.

This continued for around 10 minutes before they all zoomed off, presumably to base for a little rest from the heat.

we have achieved PLYWOOD

(by which I mean, A very bravely ventured back to B&Q again, this time DID get The Goods, aaaaaaaand then discovered that even cut down they didn't fit in the car so they still needed to be attached to the roof rack with ratchet straps--)

we have achieved PROOF that the windows CLOSE when they have ratchet straps slung around both TOP and BOTTOM

we have a house at 26.7°C and an outside world at 26.1°C and it's time to go to bed

[Gru's plan goes here]

-- but hey, maybe at least we'll manage to discourage it from getting significantly warmer in here? and maybe I'll wake up early enough to open the house up usefully while we're still below 20°C tomorrow morning?

Hastings prides itself on its status as the birthplace of Kool-Aid.

Hastings, Nebraska is where Edwin Perkins invented Kool-Aid. To honor his delicious invention, the local museum has dedicated half of a floor to the drink’s history. Kool-Aid: Discover the Dream is a nostalgic and comprehensive collection of all things Kool-Aid. The only thing missing is a chance to actually imbibe the drink itself.

Kool-Aid’s precursor was Fruit Smack, a flavored syrup. Perkins, tired of how easily the glass bottles containing the syrup leaked and broke, decided to ditch the watery aspect of the sweet mixture and instead create packets of powder. He was inspired by Jell-O. Perkins debuted the drink, which was originally called Fruit-Ade, in 1927. And its popularity only rose during the Great Depression, when Perkins lowered the cost of a packet to 5 cents and grew profits beyond what he’d made at twice the price.

The Kool-Aid exhibit at the Hastings Museum of of Natural and Cultural History is full of information about the drink’s beginnings and various marketing strategies. It includes old packaging and advertisements, as well as discontinued Kool-Aid related products like bubble gum and sherbet packets. Visitors follow a fiber optic ‘river’ of the drink that flows throughout the museum’s lower level. People can even catch a glimpse of the original Kool-Aid Man suit, though they shouldn't expect it to burst through any walls.

I am pleased to report that I have been honored with a place in the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle's 2026 Hall of Fame roster:

If you click the plus sign next to an entry, it gives a little explanatory paragraph.

I've described career awards before as "an award for winning awards". Collect the whole set...

(This database is incredibly handy, and I'm so grateful to the unsung folks who put it together. It has much to offer beyond Bujold, I should point out.)

Lots of on and off steady rain showers today and yesterday too. This should help with our drought conditions.

Quite a few Woodpeckers and House Sparrows eating suet and seed plus a few Catbirds and Mourning Doves cleaning up the crumbs.

The damp ground makes it easy to pull out some weeds between rain showers.

Rainy goes for her haircut soon so I doubt I will get to finish writing up this entry before we need to go. I'll get started anyway...

I was so happy that I could get my full spectrum camera going again. I guess what was wrong with it was every single of the 3 batteries I have for it were dead and that's why it wouldn't work yesterday. Because I kept trying batteries and none worked I was getting bummed thinking the camera was broken. Here's lots of IR Chrome infrared pics from a walk down back this morning with the dogs - all pictures of stuff you've seen before but now with a different camera. The Chrome filter makes everything that is reflecting infrared light look very red/orange:Read more... )

When I went to pick up Rainy from the groomer she told me that she found 4 fleas on her! I looked at the calendar and somehow I missed giving the dogs their flea and tick meds last month. Damn. I did the heartworm stuff but not the flea. I bet Andy has some fleas too.

Following on last month's re-release of The Writer's Little Book of Naming, The Writer's Little Book of Platitudes is back out in the world!

A white background with the text "The Writer's Little Book of Platitudes: Tips and Tricks for Taking (and Ignoring) Advice," by Marie Brennan, author of the Memoirs of Lady Trent. In the center is a red circle with a diagonal line through it (the symbol for "no") with the words "thou shalt not" inside.

“Show, don’t tell.” “Murder your darlings.” “Write every day.”

Certain pieces of advice are widespread in the writing community — but what do they really mean? And are they nuggets of universal wisdom, or do they only apply to some writers in some circumstances? Award-winning author Marie Brennan tackles these old saws, dissecting each one to see what purpose it might serve . . . and when you should toss it aside.

And starting next month, there will be a brand-new Writer's Little Book -- stay tuned for news on that . . .

In another burst of Shetland-related creativity, I... wrote a fic? For the first time in a decade?? I've never written boyslash before??? What is happening. Anyway here it is:

sail your sea, meet your storm (2380 words) by usuallyhats
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Shetland (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Duncan Hunter/Jimmy Perez
Characters: Jimmy Perez, Duncan Hunter
Summary:

"I don't know," Duncan half shouts over the din, "I just want to be out there," and he's gone before Jimmy can say anything more. Without really considering what he's doing, Jimmy follows him out, closing the door behind him in an attempt to keep the storm outside where it belongs.

This is a bundle of material for Vast Grimm, the "Creation Curation SFRPG of bizarre horror inspired by Mork Borg," It's a special offer timed for 7/7, which is apparently a special day for Mork Borg fans.

https://bundleofholding.com/presents/VastGrimm

Like a lot of material inspired by Mork Borg the typography is often somewhere between "Urgh, that's a weird layout" and "My eyes! They bleed!" which is not ideal for someone who has a damaged retina and often sees straight lines as sine waves, which is why this review doesn't go into much detail. But it's cheap and if that's the sort of thing you like it contains "everything you need to fight frenzied battles for survival as the Universe inches closer to inevitable demise. It'll be fun!"

Definitions of fun may vary, of course...

Well, ugh.
