Purpose:
I'm identifying and describing myself to make it easier for people to talk to me, for me to find community, to point out some common interests, to make it simpler for anyone who chooses to call me on blinkered or privileged thinking, and to avoid inadvertently misrepresenting myself. Because people do change over time, this post is also subject to change.
Names and Pronouns:
Please call me alatefeline on Dreamwidth. I prefer they/them pronouns. ( Read more... )
Regarding access and subscriptions: I subscribe to people's journals readily if I like reading stuff they post. Feel free to subscribe to mine or not as you like. Basically nothing on my journal is access locked, so please don't feel like it means much if I don't grant you access / accidentally hit the grant access button. I will update if and when this needs to change.
ETA: Not up to date, sorry. Now locking most entries due to the...everything. Feel free to ask for access.
Committing poetry!
(Along with fiction, demifiction, research notes, and other literary MAYHEM!)
Ahem. Announcing Ysabetwordsmith's Poetry Fishbowl, in which that writer collects prompts, writes like a MANIAC all day/night, and offers funding options to sponsor publicly sharing the goodies.

My /personal/ challenge, for myself and others, based on a recent conversation:
Think of the weirdest science fiction you're read (or watched, played etc) recently.
(Other speculative forms also welcome).
Now think of something WEIRDER.
Now go prompt /that./
Prompt -- for the Poetry Fishbowl, and/or your favorite other author, and/or a fannish kinkmeme somewhere, and/or a patch of sidewalk in need of chalking...anywhere it's going to inspire people (not chatbots) to make things. Please!
You can even give /me/ a writing prompt. Ideas and plot bunnies welcome! But, my response tim,e varies from two minutes to two centuries, overall, and my creative time is quite crunched right now. Ysabet, on the other hand, WILL be writing something, TODAY.
I am ABSOLUTELY making this post for the linkback poetry reveal perk, FYI. But it's a fun event and a good writer and new prompters do get some freebies, so why not take a look?

Not having a Tumblr, I now inflict upon you, my dear dwenizens, the results of idly scrolling the Tumblrs of various authors whose public posting I follow on and off.

"I feel like it would be useful if people conceived of causing emotional harm to others more through the lens of being the emotional equivalent to stepping on someone’s foot. Like obviously you can step on someone’s foot deliberately and maliciously, but most of the time if someone tells you you stepped on their foot you’re going to go “oh sorry I didn’t realise!” and stop doing it and try not to do it again. Getting caught up in how it makes you feel to be Someone Capable of Stepping on Others’ Feet would be a transparently self indulgent distraction from the other person’s pain, but also like… that’s just a status you hold by virtue of being human."

...is an act of hope, and therefore resistance.
Today I saw: bittercress, henbit, and onion grass are up - yum! Witch hazel bloom is fading, daffodils are coming up.
Today I got: free pears; spendy-but-fair local yarn that was what I had been lowkey looking for (natural gray undyed wool); gluten-free muffins.
Today I was able to: help others during a fire drill; encourage friendship; try my best under the circumstances; take a walk.
Today I read: some old Marvel fic that is comfort reading for me.
Today I gave: time; a fresh start; an opportunity for others to speak; adequate space in traffic; polite greetings; pettings to a kitty.
Today I ask the universe for: rest, first; encouragement therein; and opportunity, thereafter.

I've been a bit more on top of some things the last few days. ( Read more... )
On to Gratitudes! I've got a theme this time. Knitting with spare yarn. Making patches for a hat with recycled fabric. Embroidering with scrap wool. Making a computer box/temporary lap desk out of cardboard. Using cut-up plastic bottles for plant pots. Transplanting volunteer edible plants normally considered weeds where they won't be weed-whacked and can grow tasty bits for my lunch. Mulching with fallen leaves. Edging garden beds with gathered sticks. Kleptocratic-authoritarian-capitalism hates me because I like making things out of 'trash.'
Also, discussing a show with my parents. Making risotto with my mom. Singing along while my Dad plays the guitar. Going for a walk. Cuddling my kitty. Sending cat pictures to friends via text and Dreamwidth post. None of these make money. All of them are precious.

I'm awful at How Are You Doing. A friend asked and my ramble came out as a more-coherent summary than some I've managed, so I'm putting it here in case anyone needs a review.

Utter fluff, in the form of a good dozen episodes of Miraculous Ladybug. I can sense the impending plot lurking, but for now it's on par with the lightest episodes of the new She-Ra. Ask alexseanshai for the right order to watch the episodes, BTW, it's as bad as the original Leverage in terms of being aired out of order.
CN: medical, paperwork, brainweasels, swearing ( Read more... )
The tall pine tree in my parent's back yard, which had some work done today. I'm going to miss the old tree house in it! But the tree needed to breathe.
Rereading a Mercedes Lackey book or three (we'll see). Firebird is objectively a problematic book, but it also has some great character sketches, vivid sensory passages, and the classic Lackey sense, accurate or not, of historic-recreation-level detailed knowledge of the economic activities of a manor house. And the tropeyness of something playing off a classic stage show. CN: basically all the problematic tropes ( Read more... ) and still be caught up in the warmth of the lead and the bit characters (the shaman! the priest!) as they are intended to be read as sympathetic, because I read this book young and so there's a bit of taking it at face value that someone reading it for the first time might have a hard time accessing because of the bits that jar.
Cherry-menthol cough drops. I don't have a cough, I just like them. And unlike candy it's easy enough for me to stop after a few. Oral stim maybe?
Words. I seem to have more long sentences at my fingertips again, which is nice.
My sweet old kitty. Who actually clawed someone by accident the other day, but oh well. Pointy girl. <3

Listening to folk music on the couch with my Dad.
Raking leaves.
Blue sky and sunlight.
Animated TV with well-written female lead characters (I'm part way through the new She-Ra and just re-started Miraculous Ladybug since I might have time to watch it now).

A complication is that they will be trying to coordinate funding across several social networks and would prefer not to cross over people using different name/pronoun sets to refer to them.

I am asking for people who have successfully fundraised in the past to share the platform(s) they used, their organizational tips, and any ways they found to make the process less anxiety-inducing. You can comment here or contact
PS: I am not always good st housing issues. Or signal boosting. Or interacting at all. If you could have used this sort of signal boost in the past and didn't get it from me, I’m sorry.I apologize. It is okay to ask for a signal boost in the future, too, I am not going to guarantee I will have the spoons for it, but I wish you all good luck and good communication skills, the latter of which I only occasionally possess.
Sitting on the couch with my Dad while we each did our own projects to either side of a purring cat.
Actually useful discussions.
Kitty!
Teeny-tiny craft projects, (and the fact that I currently am physically capable of doing some of them, which for a while I was not and presumably someday again won’t be.)
Tools.
House plants and herbs.
