Jul. 6th, 2016 01:00 pmHngggggggggg. Animal studies start this week, though I'm not on the protocol yet so I'm only allowed to sit back and watch. Everything in the protocol goes through animal welfare to make sure it's as humane as possible, but it's still sort of somber/surprising/horrifying?? and everything seeing it for the first time. Cutting the rest of this post since it involves sacrificing lab mice and details you prob don't want to hear idk.

All right, we're winding down now to the end of the semester! I had six classes, and finished three finals (two essays and a practical) so all that's left is three exams next week! Multiple choice exams, which still weird me out because most of what I took in undergrad were biochem, physics, math, stuff that you need to show your work on so they were all short answer questions, not this scantron thing. I have terrible luck guessing, I hate scantron ):
But that won't matter so long as I know the material, so let's go!! First exam is for my Professional Discovery course.
The topic for this post is an overview of different divisions of research offered in the college, as the next two semesters will include some sort of self-study research course. They're all really cool projects, but some divisions are more exciting than others and unfortunately excitement doesn't translate very well sometimes...
( I played a lot of Pokemon Shuffle during lecture /o\ )

It was so cold today; rainy, but also windy, so that when I walk into an open space without buildings to block the wind, my umbrellas threatens to tear out of my hands or turn inside out, and then the wind dies down but it's still cold so my hands are getting numb and I keep having to alternate holding the umbrella and thawing in my pocket. The rain's washed all the flowers off the trees ): Everything's still very green!! But also very cold and very wet and come on it's almost May, give me back my sun.
Anyways, while it's thundering outside, I drew up the last few bits of metabolism, the phase II reactions.
( thunder and lightning outside, please don't power outage tonight, my laptop lasts 3 minutes on battery power..... )

/war flashbacks to ochem
except there's no arrow pushing or retroactive synthesis problems so I think I got this
DRUG METABOLISM!! staring with phase 1 reactions, in which we're adding/modifying functional groups so they can be masked in phase II for excretion. A large majority of metabolism is done by monooxygenases, the main enzyme being cytochrome P450 (NADPH, H+, O2) so when in doubt, guess cyp
( my first year of undergrad i called my mom crying and asking to come home because i failed my first midterm but she said to stick it out and turns out the class avg was like 35%, i beat the avg and did well in the class; college was so surreal why would you write a test like that )

Okay OTC time. The two I'm to counsel on tomorrow are either heartburn or cold/allergy and I'm praying to the high heavens it's heartburn because heartburn is easy and straightforward and doesn't include fifty thousand meds like cold/allergy does.
( heartburn heartburn heartburn heartburn )

Jul. 17th, 2015 03:05 pmENDOCRINE GLANDS
Hypothalamus --> Pituitary/Hypophysis by hypophyseal portal system
Pituitary gland-- sella turcica of sphenoid bone; consists of anterior & posterior pituitary (two lobes, like lips when you put them together and spit like "pi--tu! ...itary")
Anterior pituitary hormones:
Follicle-stimulating hormone (stimulates gonadotropin follicles) and luteinizing hormone (luteinization = help form corpora lutea (gland that develops in ovary)): regulate gamete production and gonadal hormone activity
Adrenocorticotropic hormone: regulates adrenal (adreno-) cortex (-cortico-)
Thyroid-stimulating hormone/thyrotropin: regulates activity of thyroid gland
Growth hormone: targets many bodily tissues but mostly on muscle and long bones; I need more growth hormone
Prolactin: stimulates milk production in breasts for women, unknown function in men
Posterior pituitary

Jul. 16th, 2015 05:14 pm/lies down The aunt flew home yesterday so it's just my mom and my cousin and me left and you know what that means? No more slacking off, I've actually got to do my anat now Q__Q Around where I left is the ear.
External Outer Ear-- whatever you can touch/please don't poke your finger past
Auricle/Pinna is the large external structure, ending in a lobule/ear lobe
External acoustic meatus/auditory canal leads into the eat, and is waxy due to ceruminous glands
Tympanic membrane/eardrum sits at the very end, and separates the outer and middle ear
Middle Ear-- tympanic cavity insiide temporal bone
Auditory ossicles: contains three bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes according to their shapes; the malleus/hammer comes right after the eardrum (like drumsticks), and hits the incus/anvil to create something fancy like stapes/stirrup, which is sort of triangle shaped like the stirrups used in horse riding
Inner Ear-- the book described it as having "a system of bony and rather tortuous chambers" and of course I misread that as torturous bECAUSE IT IS
The outside structure is the bony labyrinth flush to the temporal bone cavities, and the fluid inside is called perilymph because it's the lymph on the outside
The inside structure is the membranous labyrinth which is a membrane tube following the contour of the bony labyrinth, and similarly, the fluid inside is called endolymph
The bony labyrinth is subdivided into three divisions:
Cochlea is the memorable snail shape structure; and the vestibule and semicircular canals are involved in equilibrium

Jun. 2nd, 2015 11:31 amOKAY BLOOD TIME.
Human body --> ~5L blood --> 55% plasma (water solvent, electrolytes for osmotic balance and pH buffering, proteins, and nutrients/waste/gases/hormones to be transported) + 45% cells (RBC, WBC, platelets)
I've already covered WBC in micro woes so I won't do it here.
Instead, we'll talk about blood coagulation.

Time for some more anat hell! \o/ Since I got the second half of this two unit course waived by the school, I'm going to study the rest of the material on my own before August without having to worry about exams :E
Sensory receptors
Free nerve endings --> least specialized (free!! do what you want /o/); pain and temperature
+ epidermal cells = Merkel disc & hair follicle receptors --> light touch
Tactile corpuscles --> hairless skin only (for skin w/ hair you have the follicle receptors); light touch
Bulbous corpuscles --> deep pressure, stretch (think of bulbous balloons, can stand a lot of pressure blowing into them and they stretch)
Lamellar corpuscles --> deep in dermis; first application of deep pressure and then the bulbous takes over; used for high frequency vibrations (lamellar is like thin sheets of stuff, like laminated paper that you wave around and it makes that cool vibrating sound lmao)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Visual System a.k.a. YOU MISSED YOU CHANCE AT DISSECTING A COW EYE ASLFDKJH
Lacrimal apparatus (now every time you cry you can think about anat and cry even more :x):
Lacrimal gland (tears are actually stored above and lateral to the eyeball so they can flush things off the surface)
--> Lacrimal puncta (puncta = points, you can see this if you pull back the bottom eyelid and look medial for that little hole)
--> Lacrimal canaliculi (water is carried through a canal)
--> lacrimal sac (collects tears)
--> nasolacrimal duct (SNOT EVERYWHERE, this is why your nose runs when you cry)
Eye structures
Palpebrae: eyelids; from the latin word palpebra meaning eyelid, really no help at all remembering (pal = to touch, and I guess the eyelids are sort of like bras... in that they cup the eye, keep things from touching the eye, etc)
Lacrimal caruncle: the pink spot at the medial corner of the eye that I try to remember to draw and has sweat/oil glands that form sleep when you wake up; from the Latin caruncula meaning wart lmao please no not near my eyes (I prob should've studied latin in college as my foreign language so all this terminology would be easier to grasp /o\ Instead of, you know, don't fall a"sleep" in your "uncle"s "car" or something
Eyelashes: contain ciliary glands (modified sweat glands for lubrication; cilia are hair like extensions around cells for locomotion, and you sweat when you move) & tarsal glands (modified sebaceous glands; tarsals are toes, which also sort of look like a row of eyelashes, and they don't really get oily but they can stink like oil turns rancid)
Internal anatomy
The wall is made of three layers:
Fibrous layer = outermost dense avascular connective tissue, includes sclera (white) and cornea (clear)
Vascular layer = middle layer; contains choroid (supply blood and nutrients for the eye) near the back and is modified towards the front into the ciliary body (ciliary muscles change lens shape like cilia on cell is for movement, and also secretes aqueous humor so the eye doesn't shrivel up); the iris and pupil are at the very front of the eye
Sensory layer = innermost sensory layer is actually two layers of retina:
Pigmented layer = outer layer contains pigments that absorb light and prevent scattering in the eye, act as phagocytes for photoreceptor cell renewal, and store vitamin A for the photoreceptor cells. Think of Red for Leader! Keeps light under check and photoreceptors clean and happy!
Neural layer = inner layer containing rods and cones and all that wonderful vision stuff; at the back by the blind spot is the fovea centralis (central pit) that's almost entirely cones so this is where color vision reigns supreme
also I've got serious astigmatism asdflkjh

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Okay, so against better judgement, I wanted to get back into RPing, which I haven't touched seriously since like last year and it is honestly really nervewracking, ahaha~ Not naming characters or games yet because it'll be really embarrassing if I don't pass the application stage, haha, but it's the first time I played a panfandom game and it's just a test drive at the moment which I love because I can try out different characters with zero obligation and best of all-- nobody knows it's me c': All the old anxieties are still there; I keep messing up and can't remember to write in present tense because I hardly ever do that unless I'm recalling a dream, and I keep worrying I'm not coming off as interesting enough and I'm not writing so that the other person is having fun, and is my character justification off?? I don't know because I'm not familiar with all these canons, and I haven't finished writing my app yet so there's so many things I'm doing without being 100% sure that's the direction I want to take with the character and ahhhh. I want to be the sort of writing partner that people get excited about seeing a message in their email first thing in the morning, you know? Like how many people have been for me. I've been told that I'm a good RPer and that I keep characters in character and am fun and interesting and all that, but even if this is terrible of me, part of me doesn't really believe it 100%?? Because all I've ever played were single fandom Tennis games-- one single fandom, and the same people over and over again through the same games and the same characters. It's not that I think they're lying, but more like they know it's me and that already colors their judgement?? I want to be judged on how I write, not the person I am, even though muse and mun are supposed to stay completely separate. All things considering, I'm still a newbie RPer. I can't consider Tennis games to be real games for me (sorry, sorry this is rude, probably) because getting in is so lax and characters are just sort of vaguely understood by the players instead of being shown explicitly through writing like panfandom has to be because you assume nobody knows your fandom. I've been too coddled, haha! There were even times where people have invited me into games, and said I didn't even need to app because they knew how I can write. But at the same time, they were expecting the same characters, and what if I didn't want to play that character? What if I wanted to try out a new character? Not needing to apply is only going to make my characterization suffer, because then I don't have a good foundation, and nobody ever critiques or gives feedback or anything; I know there's things I can improve on, but I've never given the opportunity to welcome feedback so now I'm sort of scared because I want to play but I'm probably really terrible at it and I don't want to be that one person that's sort of awkwardly lumbering along so I'm really really terrified of playing this game.
WOW ZERO CONFIDENCE OKAY.
...but, you know? Last night, after I sent off my first few tags in the test drive, it was the first time in so long that I was too excited to sleep, that I wanted to sit and type and write, and that excitement was a sort of encouragement, that this is a good idea and I'm headed the right direction, who cares what other people think, because a test drive allows that certain freedom.
So I think I'll keep at it...!

May. 16th, 2015 10:11 pmI watched Big Hero 6 today /o/ It was an all right movie, I enjoyed it but it was largely predictable. Tonight's tennis session earned me a blister underneath the callus on my palm, you have any idea how weird that is? I've got calluses everywhere now from the grip, but the palm isn't the best place to slap a bandaid and expect it to stick so oh well, I'll tough it out. Spent a large part of the day helping my parents trim the tree in our backyard before it topples over and takes out the fence, and then continued reading Haikyuu!! Haha, I've been unconsciously holding my breath as I read the matches, so my throat got really sore before I noticed :'D Also, I went with my mom to buy new kitchen knives this morning and she was telling me about the dream she had the night before-- she goes "your brother was this tall," saluting the sky, "and then you were here," she finished, lowering her hand down to chest level. T-they say dreams are like innermost thoughts and stuff, right? As in, she views my brother as a full fledged adult, and then I am still Aki baby, okay QuQ
First day of break and I've got chills and stomach pains rushing me to the bathroom three times already today with no chance of letting up :E I knew I shouldn't have eaten that one cookie during my microbiology exam-- MICROBES ARE UBIQUITOUS!! But lmao thanks body for holding out until after school's out for the semester, I don't care about getting sick when there's no school. Going out to play tennis every night from now on! /o/ Then I'm rereading the Haikyuu!! manga to get back up to date with it. My worst dream came true and now that I have time to draw, the drawing muse has completely evaporated QvQ I'll work it back up!!
.......lmao I was in the middle of typing "hemolysis" but instead of "hemo," my fingers went autopilot and put down "help" /o\ THEY KNOW WHAT'S UP, HAHA. Next two days are autopilot mode \o/ Only thing to do today is review bacteria-- I got most of them down but I like typing it out in case my brain seizes up on me during exams and then I still have word association to fall back on as a last resort.
Going to spend all Thursday night drawing~~ And then I really want to look into these RP games cropping up on my Plurk, I'm intrigued .__. Hopefully 'cause it's a large panfandom group, I can remain fairly invisible in that sort of game and play to my heart's content without people staring too hard at my writing, haha |D;; Single fandom's feeling like that, so hopefully this'll work out and I won't panic and flake :x ASSUMING I GET IN FIRST, OKAY GOTTA BRUSH UP ON CANON.
...AFTER EXAMS.
