They probably don't play for money, because it'd be fairly useless in the Pegasus galaxy.
At the men's game... I think Rodney would kvetch about losing all the time, but he knows he sucks at bluffing, so I think he'd be relatively amiable about it.
Carson loses constantly but he's okay with it. He's also usually the first to fold. He's there because he needs to socialize with other people and talk. He and Radek gossip the most about the doings of Atlantis.
Radek does okay. He consoles himself for his losses by taunting Rodney over losing more than he does. Rodney occasionally tries to turn the attention off himself by ribbing Carson about Cadman.
There's a limited amount of discussion of the female staff when Rodney, Carson or Sheppard are there, for obvious reasons. The rest of the men in the city aren't quite willing to indulge in locker room talk in the presence of any of them. Zelenka and Lorne hear more than those three do. Radek disapproves silently and Lorne understands but doesn't do it himself.
Ronon thinks playing games with cards is fairly pointless. He attends occasionally, and then mostly for the beer stash.
Lorne and Sheppard frequently end up going up against each other, both trying to be the more "laid-back-but-really-watching-closely than the other one" guy. Lorne's ahead on wins so far, because Sheppard gets distracted more easily. (By mutual agreement, there are no ranks at the table, although Lorne always calls Sheppard "Colonel" and he always calls the Major "Lorne.")
The girls game... after several months, they still haven't figured out when Miko is bluffing and when she isn't. Combine that with her ability to count cards, and she cleans up regularly. Cadman does okay when she's paying attention, but sometimes she's distracted. Especially when the others ask her questions about Carson (she gets surprisingly flustered by some of the attention).
Teyla finds it all interesting as a social ritual, especially given the environment of Atlantis. This feels natural to her, and she's relieved to find that female bonding does occur in Earth cultures, just in different places than she's used to. Kate is the one teaching Teyla to play. Kate can't seem to shake being the quiet, observational one even at poker night (although if there's enough alcohol available, like that one night that someone brought the vodka, she loosens up and starts singing Janis Joplin songs *g*)
Elizabeth never attends poker night because she doesn't want to cramp the party.
Most of the women (other than Miko and Kate) talk freely and in graphic detail about the men on the expedition, although when Teyla is there, they say a little less about Sheppard than they do otherwise. And Cadman has gotten quieter with the details since she and Carson started dating. Ronon has been a very hot topic ever since his arrival. Several of the female scientists have their eyes on Lorne as well.
It's Poker Night in Atlantis. Who's at the table? Who's winning? Who's losing? Who's being gossiped about and who is doing the gossiping? Who's got a poker face and who is good at counting cards?
What do you all think? What's Poker Night in Atlantis really like?
