Importance of Thread-Safe CollectionsIn multi-threaded applications different threads usually need to access and modify the same data. Without thread-safe collections the following problems may occur:
Types of Thread-Safe CollectionsJava provides several ways to use thread-safe collections. VectorThis class is one of the oldest thread-safe collections in Java. It is synchronized and works just like an ArrayList which means only one thread can access it at a time. While it ensured thread safety as it can be slower because of the extra work needed to manage synchronization for each operation. Syntax StackStack is a subclass of Vector and is used to implement a last-in, first-out (LIFO) stack. Like Vector, Stack is also synchronized means it is thread-safe. However, it is not commonly used anymore and the Deque interface specifically ArrayDeque is recommended for most use cases that involve stack like behavior. ConcurrentHashMapIt is a thread-safe implementation of the Map interface. Not like the Hashtable which synchronizes the whole map every time the ConcurrentHashMap synchronizes only small parts of the map so it works faster when many threads are using it. Syntax: We do not need to synchronize when accessing or modifying the map. BlockingQueueThe BlockingQueue is a special kind of thread-safe queue used in producer-consumer problems. It handles all the synchronization also it provides a thread-safe way for multiple threads to pass data between each other. When the queue is full or empty methods such as put() and take() wait automatically. Syntax Synchronized CollectionsAn earlier way of Java to make collections thread-safe was by using special wrapper methods from the Collections class that add synchronization to regular lists, sets, and maps. Syntax: CopyOnWriteArrayListThe CopyOnWriteArrayList is another thread-safe as it is alternative to the ArrayList and is best for lists that are read frequently and modified occasionally. Every add or remove creates a new copy of the entire list. It is safe to iterate without external synchronization. In the program a ConcurrentHashMap is used to store key-value pairs where each thread adds its entry. A CopyOnWriteArrayList is used to maintain a log of actions performed by the threads. Inside the main method a loop created five threads. Each thread generates a string such as "Thread-1" and adds it to the map and the log. Because both the map and the list are thread-safe all threads can access and modify them simultaneously without using synchronized blocks or additional locking. After starting all threads, the program waits briefly using Thread.sleep(1000) to ensure all threads finish their tasks. Then it prints out the contents of how Java's built-in concurrent collections can make multi-threaded programming easier and safer by handling synchronization automatically.
