Name:
Originally named tveitite, in honor of John P. Tveit (1909 - 1978), quarry owner of Høydalen, Telemark, Norway. He found the first sample. The suffix was added in 1987 by the International Mineralogical Association to conform to new naming rules regarding the dominant rare-earth element (REE). Regarding pronunciation, the name Tveit rhymes with 'late'.

Irregular lump. Altered on the surface and in cracks to kainosite. Contains inclusions of a gadolinite group mineral.
