GS1 Digital Link

edit

GS1 Digital Link is a global standard developed by GS1 that encodes GS1 identifiers — such as the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), batch or lot number, serial number, and expiration date — into structured, web-addressable URLs. These URLs can be embedded in carriers such as QR codes, GS1 DataMatrix symbols, NFC tags or RFID, allowing a single symbol on a product to connect users or systems to digital information and enabling compliance with initiatives such as the EU’s Digital Product Passport regime. [1]

The standard allows brand owners and retailers to provide dynamic product data, including descriptions, traceability information, regulatory documentation, usage instructions, authentication tools, and consumer-facing content.[2] A key component is the resolver, which interprets the GS1 Digital Link URL and redirects the user to the appropriate resource based on role, context, language, or device type.[3]

GS1 Digital Link is increasingly adopted in retail, healthcare, and logistics as industries transition from traditional 1D barcodes to more capable 2D symbols. It supports traceability, consumer transparency, sustainability reporting, and product authentication.
