zvi: NaNoWriMo participant (nanowrimo)
I got Scrivener (the NaNoWriMo trial) to check out. I'm not really planning to do NNWM, more planning to use it to write my Yuletide and [community profile] holly_poly fics. Haven't decided if I'm going to try to write 50k of them. I mean, I kind of want to, but my Yuletide story will probably be a vignette/slice of life deal, and I don't see that turning into even 10k. Although, I suppose I could write a bunch of vignettes.

Anyway. I can really see how Scrivener would be great for either doing a snowflake method or one of those day by day outline methods. The means of making a hyperlink seem unnecessarily circuitous, though.

Someone on my friend's list got their first smartphone, and I unleashed more information than they were probably looking for. However, I have decided to crossshare with you, because I can.

[personal profile] seperis has a lot of good recommendations for playing with Android. Also, if you think of a sort of program you would like, google Android [program] best, and only look at lists from the past 3 months (things move too fast in the app space.) Also, lifehacker has lots of recommendations, with lots of explanations as to why something is good or bad.

Google Now should already be in your phone. I mostly follow hockey and get flight information and package delivery info from it. Google also does maps and navigation integration, has a shopping app, does gmail, and youtube. That should already be installed.

It becomes apparent that I spend too much time on my phone. )

Dreamwidth Question Time

Is there a way to split what's presented on your Tumblr Dashboard? My Dashboard is pure porn, but occasionally I see these non-porn things I'd like to follow, but I don't want to mix it all in with the porn. It's very ... disorienting.

Editorial Note: If I ask you guys to explain what somebody's getting at in some other venue, I am not asking you to go over and argue with that person. I am asking you to come back here and talk to me about it. I suspect that there are a lot of thinky, talky people reading this journal, so it may be that some percentage of you are moved to talk to whomever has said the thing I'm not understanding, but that's not what I'm encouraging or advocating. If I'm asking you to tell someone that they are wrong on the internet, or even if I'm just telling you that someone is wrong on the internet, it is highly unlikely that this will be rhetorically framed as a question.

Twitter backup

One of the things that makes me grumpy about using twitter is that it doesn't include a backup utility.

Johann Burkard wrote a java Twitter Backup program. Version 3.1.6 works perfectly well with Ubuntu 10.10 and Twitter's oAuth setup. :)

If I make hardlinks between the extension folders of my Firefox profiles, I bet that will make my Firefox profiles all have the same extensions.

Er, why didn't I find this out two years ago when I wanted to figure out how to share extensions between profiles?

* Beringer's 2007 White Zinfandel tastes like water, lightly sweetened. DO NOT DRINK. Well, I mean, if you don't actually like wine, you could drink it. But otherwise, no.

* Richard Stallman is a sexist dick. Something I did not know but am not surprised to find out. DON'T READ COMMENTS.

* CJ Cherryh, Lynn Abbey, and Jane Fancher will be selling their backlists at http://www.closed-circle.net/ Most unfortunately, this website is hideously ugly, to the point of making it difficult to navigate. (Really, it's like some nightmare flashback to Geocities 1998. The navigation in the bookstore part of the site is done with images of red, turquoise, and purple Comic Sans on a gold background.)

* However, all is not lost! Jesse's Bookmarklet Site has many great bookmarklets for dealing with websites, including some for zapping annoyances, like incredibly ugly colors and backgrounds. If you are a special snowflake who needs webpages reformatted just so, Jesse even has a bookmarklet generator. I myself created a bookmarklet for creating page margins, which has saved my sanity many times over.

* You know what the archive of our own needs? An EXPORT function. Also, an easier way of editing the tags and other heading info, which is different from how you edit actual story text, because loading three pages to add the tag "character of color" to about fifty different stories was the OPPOSITE of fun.

* In v. unsurprising news, I really like Charles Shaw's Nouveau Red wine. It's cheap, good table wine, and that's really all I want.

So, in the last few days, I have discovered that you can open a tab in a new window link in a new tab in Firefox by clicking on it with your middle-button/scrollwheel. Why didn’t anyone Firefox tell me about this tremendously convenient and awesome utility?

Also, I discovered that Logjam can happily live in my notification bar, and I can click it when I want it to appear with a new blank entry, and then click it when I want it to go away, but without actually closing.

Little conveniences like this are why it is helpful to read software documentation, but when software works right out of the box and appears perfectly self-explanatory, I don’t bother. And then I go years without knowing such tremendously helpful things. I don’t even know what to do with myself.

Edited to correct.
