“Everything was delicious, Martha,” Kate says, setting down her fork with a satisfied sigh.

“And will be for days to come,” Castle adds, casting a pointed look at the serving dishes spread across the table.

“Not the way you eat, it won’t,” his mother shoots back without missing a beat. “Mark my words; he’ll be down here at god-only-knows in the morning eating that artichoke dip with a spoon.”

“I’m a growing boy,” Castle says with a grin as he rises and begins to clear the table. When Kate moves to help, he immediately waves her off. “Alexis and I have got this.”

Kate settles back into her chair and sips her wine, letting the soft strains of the jazz tune playing on the stereo wash over her. Even so, she can feel Martha's watchful gaze on her, as it has been throughout dinner, and isn’t surprised when, after a few minutes spent in companionable silence, the red head leans forward and asks, “Can I give you a piece of advice?”

“Of course.”

Castle’s mother casts a glance at the kitchen, where father and daughter are currently elbow-deep in soapy dishwater, before getting up and moving to sit beside Kate at the dining table. “The next time a nosy, albeit well-intentioned, Grande Dame makes the mistake of stealing your moment, tell her to take a hike.”

Kate hides the embarrassment she feels heating her cheeks behind her glass of Bordeaux. “It was a relief to see that everyone was in one piece. When that bomb went off I – we – assumed the worst.”

“Oh so did we, dear. So did we. Even Richard had his doubts.”

“Castle? Really?”

Martha nods. “I think he’s seen one too many close calls this past year not to believe that the unthinkable may actually come to pass.”

Intended or not, Kate feels her heart sink at the mild rebuke she hears in the elder woman’s words. “Martha, about this summer; I never meant to—”

“Of course you didn’t,” Martha interrupts with a wave of her hand. “You are many things, Katherine Beckett, but cruel is certainly not one of them.”

“I just couldn’t see any other way to get past what had happened.”

“Kate, you don’t owe me an explanation.”

Beckett glances at Castle, watches the easy way he laughs with his daughter as they work together in tandem. “I know.”

Martha reaches out to take Kate’s hand in hers. “He understands, you know. And he’ll wait. For as long as you need him to.”

No more than a whisper, the words tumble from Beckett’s lips before she can stop them. “He shouldn’t have to.”

“Maybe not,” Martha concedes without an ounce of accusation or bitterness. “But I saw the way he looked at you in that bank today. More importantly, I saw the way you looked at him. And something tells me that whatever the future holds will be worth the wait.”

“Then why did you—”

“Because bullet or not, no one walks away from something like what happened in that cemetery unscathed.” Martha gives Kate’s hand a final squeeze. “You aren’t the only one who needs time to heal,” she murmurs, pulling away as Castle comes up beside them and reaches for his wine glass.

“So, what’d I miss?”

“What you missed darling, is dessert. I bought ice cream.” She quickly shoos Castle back into the kitchen with a wave of her hand. “There are some things in life one simply should not wait for,” she calls after him while giving Kate a conspiratorial wink. “And chocolate gelato is one of them.”

yay! that was great. I love stories with Martha/Kate chats, there should be more of them!

I loved Martha's understand but also the last part, Martha declaring dessert in fine dramatic form. That was so her! Great story, well written. :D

“Mark my words; he’ll be down here at god-only-knows in the morning eating that artichoke dip with a spoon.”

WELL WHO WOULDN'T, I'd like to know. ::artichoke dip drool::

This was a nice convo - I like the sense of bravado you've captured here on Martha's end. She almost totally overshadows everyone else, which is about what you'd expect from her! ;)

Awesome! I think there should be Martha & Kate convos...like Martha sharing more about Castle as a boy, etc.

On, I love it! You've captured Martha's voice so beautifully, which can be so hard. This has just whetted my appetite for more Martha-Kate fics.

I LOVE it. I think we all wanted more from that fade to black with family dinner and this was lovely.

Fantastic Martha voice. Spot on.

KELLY!!!!! OMG I adore you. (This is Jess. The same Jess you took to DuPars my first week in LA)

Okay onto the review. I loved this. Martha is my favorite secondary character and I love this so called relationship she has with Kate (like her calling to invite Kate to her play.) I would love to see conversations like this, Beckett in her element but with Castke's family. I hope you write more for the two of them. I need more Martha/Kate bonding in my life.

This is wonderful, and you have captured Martha so perfectly. My only complaint is that we don't get anything like this on the show, Martha would be the perfect person to use for some exposition about Kate couched in the form of advice.

Great Job!!!!!

I agree that you have Martha spot on. Would that the show would have more Martha and Beckett private interaction.

You definitely have Martha's voice (and common sense - Eye of the
Beholder advice notwithstanding) down pat. More please. I'm definitely craving more Beckett/Martha chats and more Beckett/Lanie chats.

You do know that you made me spit my coffee across my desk when i read the lines:

Mark my words; he’ll be down here at god-only-knows in the morning eating that artichoke dip with a spoon.”

“I’m a growing boy,” Castle says with a grin as he rises and begins to clear the table.

Because you know exactly what i was thinking at that point. He is a growing boy - but not in a good way.

I do think it would be nice to see more of Kate without Castle - see her in her own context rather than in his. There's so much there waiting to be explored.

I do know the original premise of the show was to present just about everything through Castle's eyes. They've been moving away from that - albeit slowly - but i've always been of the view that there should have been far more scenes of Beckett's life - particularly her interactions with other characters. For example, if she and Lanie are supposed to be BFFs it would be really nice to see even one evening out with the two of them (beating potential suitors off with sarcasm sticks). I'd certainly be happy to skip any number of 'Castle with Alexis' scenes to get one Beckett/Lanie scene.

This was a perfect way to acknowledge Martha and her ruining of such a perfect moment! :)

Loved it. Wonderful job.

I love Martha. Castle and Beckett aside, Martha is the best part about this show. You really captured her well here. I'd love to see more scene with her and Kate. Great story!

What a gem! Thanks for writing it. Cops and Robbers was the last ep I was excited about after watching (I guess that makes me a pretty horrible fan *g*)

What I love most about this one is your sense of the loft. It's so warm and family-welcoming. The artichoke dip exchange = funny, but this bit is SO martha:

“The next time a nosy, albeit well-intentioned, Grande Dame makes the mistake of stealing your moment, tell her to take a hike.

Thanks for the share. Wonderful

Oooh! This was great, such wonderful atmosphere and charcterization. And capturing --- with artichoke dip. Just what I needed! Love Martha! I think she should have her own show - but not in the "Once upon a crime" way. Even for her, that was over the top.

Your Martha, though? Adorable! More! I think she really needs to take matters into her own hands, since she did such a great catalysm job with her encore performance. I want her to work her magic on Beckett, Castle AND Alexis.
Can you make her? Please?
