In which I wrote A LOT of BSG fic and a few others things.
One-shots
There’ll be an Evolution of the Human Soul (BSG, Adama/Roslin post-mutiny); Try as she might she hadn’t been able to stop the relentless churning of her thoughts, the endless replaying of the day’s –the past few days’ - tumultuous events scattered throughout her mind like pieces of a puzzle she hasn’t yet been able to solve.
Another Round (BSG, Adama/Roslin fighting fic); “And that,” she says, inclining her head to indicate the tumbler in his hand – almost empty Bill realizes, reaching again for the bottle, “helps bring you clarity, I suppose?”
Yours to Miss (BSG, Adama/Roslin, New Caprica Groundbreaking fluff); For the first time in years, Bill wishes he had the luxury of living only for today.
Mastering Self Requires Strength (BSG, Adama/Roslin from another POV); It’s unsettling how recent events have quickly brought us to this counterpoint; a desperate dependence on the very traits we’d once feared would destroy us.
We’ll Gather All Our Arms Can Carry (BSG, Roslin/Adar, pre-series); Shrouded in shadows and secrecy, she’d been able to enjoy Richard’s company, his companionship, and his body without ever having to truly let him in.
Multi-Chapter Fics
She Lies Awake and Dreaming of Home (BSG, Laura Roslin, Adama/Roslin epic fic); Today the sun will rise in the East, and I will raise a voice to the canyon. As the campfire dies, my América lies asleep, and dreaming of home. She is asleep, and dreaming of home.
Crossovers
Toward a Psychology of Being (BSG/Bones crossover); 'Well we are taking about the mother of all humanity here, Bones. She’s bound to have one or two secrets.'
Crackfic
Die, Strep Die! (BSG, ensemble; co-authored by
Challengefics
Believest Thou This? (BSG, Adama/Roslin Earth 1.0 re-write); And like a switch being flipped, Laura is suddenly, painfully aware – of everything.
A Match (Nearly) Made on New Caprica (BSG, Adama/Roslin, fluffy crackiness); “All I’m saying is you’re lonely, she’s lonely. Sounds like a match made on New Caprica to me.”
Drabbles
Progression (BSG, Laura Roslin); The first time…
All Over Again (BSG, Kara Thrace); Kara wonders what it must have felt like.
Elegy (BSG, Lee Adama, Adama/Roslin implied); For the first time in years, Lee cries.
The Book of Love (BSG, Adama/Roslin books = love fic); To the untrained ear, Bill’s voice isn’t what one would call ‘pretty’.
Playing With Fire (BSG, Adama/Roslin with a side of Zarek); Every threat has an underbelly.
On the Other Side (BSG, Kara/Sam – of a sort); One instant Lee is standing before her, talking of adventure…and the next Kara is ascending.
Deafening Silence (SG1, Sam/Jack); Not so long ago, Carter would have welcomed this silence.
And a little Q&A about my writing this year
My favorite story this year (of my own): ‘She Lies Awake and Dreaming of Home’. The fic-‘o-doom. My Laura Roslin opus. My seven-month labor of love.
My best story this year: In an effort to not have the same answer to every one of these questions, I’m going to shelf ‘She Lies Awake’ and instead say ‘We’ll Gather All Our Arms Can Carry’. Writing Roslin/Adar was both interesting and a real stretch for me (an obsessive A/R fangirl), and I really do like the way this one turned out: simple and emotionally powerful.
Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: ‘She Lies Awake and Dreaming of Home’. And now I’m going to take a moment to be utterly whiny and full of myself. This story continues to be something I am immensely proud of; but discovering that people in fandom didn’t seem to love it as much as I did…well, it was disappointing and really made me question myself as a writer. Still am, to be honest. But I’m still here so that’s something, right? /self-indulgent gripe
Most fun story: This is a tie between ‘Die, Strep Die!’ and ‘A Match (Nearly) Made on New Caprica’. Writing ‘Die’ with
Sexiest story: Do I even write sexy stories? *ponders* Wait! Yes! But…I can’t tell y’all about it yet. You’ll have to check back later. *iz evil*
Hardest story to write: Wait for it… ‘She Lies Awake’. Not only because of the length of the story, but also because it involved weaving together a lot of smaller vignettes that followed two independent tracks in time (1st: past moments in Laura’s relationship with Bill, interspersed and leading up to; 2nd: the sex scene we didn’t see in ‘A Disquiet Follows My Soul’).
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? MORE. LOTS MORE. Though I think that’s mainly owed to
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? I wrote crack and learned it can be fun to throw logic and canon out the window – but only when drugs are involved. I wrote a very explicitly non-OTP story and learned that doing so is not only challenging but also kind of fun and a great way to explore a character more deeply. And I wrote SG1, from which I learned that like 2/3 of my flist are rabid SG1 and Sam/Jack fans. I am totally okay with this, by the way. *g*
Do you have any goals for the New Year? Umm… write something that is not BSG – just as soon as I finish a couple BSG fics that are currently squirreled away on my hard drive. Maybe I’ll even go back and finish that West Wing series I started two years ago and whose final installment is half-written and also languishing on my hard drive. And to be more sure of myself as a writer; something I thought I already was but learned this year I’m going to have to work at a bit.
