Going on vacation in California? From the south to the north, east to the west, here's my list of AWESOME restaurants that I've had the pleasure of dining at. Something for everybody and in no particular order. Updated August 2009

******New Listings*******
Daikokuya - Little Tokyo - The best ramen is found in Japan. But unless you are going to the Land of the Rising Sun, then Daikokuya is your best bet here in the USA! I visited the location in Little Tokyo and wow was it great! The restaurant is very small and the wait can easily be an hour long or more, but the food is totally worth it. Daikokuya's specialty is the Tonkotsu Ramen. A hot bowl of pork bone soup that boils for HOURS the day and night before. If you want extra flavor, get the koteri broth. Much, much richer. Their fried rice is one of the best I've ever had. Other tasty items include teriyaki chicken bowls, and the chicken and egg bowl. but next time I will. Plus, you can have as much red pickled ginger as you want.
Splash Cafe - Pismo Beach - Famous for their clam chowder. World famous actually. If you get the bread bowl, you can get refills at $1 per ladle full. Try it with their seafood garnish. Also, their battered fish is COD! Excellent.
Palermo Italian Restaurant - Covina - I absolutely LOVE their fettucini Alfredo with chicken! When I lived in LA, "Palermo's" (what we called it) was a place we visited at least once a month. It's important to note that they may serve another soup in place of minestrone, but all their soups are good. Lasagna, spaghetti with meat sauce or sausage, and their pizza are equally as good. Their prices for complete dinners are pretty reasonable.
**************************

The Hitching Post - Casmalia - This restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. From the 101 freeway you have to go approximately 5 or 6 miles of back roads to get to it. Just look at the website to get a feel for the place. They serve Santa Maria style BBQ. Easily, the one of the best (if not THE best) meal of your life. Their steaks rival other fancier places. I honestly can't decide if I like this place better, or Morton's!
Hitching Post II - Buellton - The "little brother" of the HP restaurant family. This one is located in the beautiful, cool Santa Ynez Valley. While their their food is just as delicious (especially the steaks), some of the menu items are cooked a little bit different. I should also point out that the menu for this restaurant contains different items. I should also mention that this is the location filmed in the movie Sideways! Worth the trip, but I personally prefer the original location, about an hour north of this one. Give or take.
Aunt Emma's - Chula Vista - An array of yummy pancakes and king sized omelettes! Thinking of Aunt Emma's always brings back fond memories of my honeymoon.
Hot Wing's Cafe - Pasadena, Glendale, and Los Angeles. Some of the best wings I've ever had have been consumed at the Hot Wings Cafe. I admit, the Pasadena location was slipping in quality by the time I moved. That's not to say it's still the same, or that none of the locations are worth a try. They make their own bleu cheese dressing from scratch. The ranch is delicious, but probably powder based. Give this local chain a try!
Hunan Garden - Oxnard - I ate there 3+ times a week when I worked weeks in Oxnard. A great place for lunch and even better for dinner. Large portions at a reasonable price. And what seems expensive, is well worth its price. Favorites include the Pineapple Chicken, Ginger Beef, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Sauteed Spinach, and most of their soups. I miss it!
Juan Pollo Caution: Loud music plays on the main page! - Various locations - The BEST Tasting CHICKEN! Juicy and flavorful! Yum!
Canter's - A landmark. Open all the time. Try the Matzo Ball soup or their pastrami sandwiches. On Fairfax Blvd. in Fairfax Village in LA.
The Original Philippes - Los Angeles - Where the beef dip was invented. Another landmark. Once labeled as the #1 restaurant in LA to get a delicious wholesome meal for little money. Always busy. Across and down the street from Union Station.
Fu-Shing - Pasadena - Mmm.... Delicious Chinese food in a fancy place. Excellent service to boot. Favorites include steamed dumplings with a side of ginger, house won ton soup...... I forgot the others. Fu-Shing also has a full bar and some of their drinks are pretty good. They'll also give you hats and take pictures of you on your birthday or anniversary.
Fosselman's - Alhambra - Family owned ice cream parlor since 1919! My favorite ice cream. Period. Rich and creamy. Try the Rum Raisin, Toasted Almond, Peppermint Stick, or a giant banana split. Oh, they also make ice cream sodas the old fashioned way. Wonderful!
PINK'S!!! - Hollywood - This place gets over 2,000 customers per day. If you're in the area and you like hot dogs you HAVE to go here. You never know who'll you'll see waiting for a hot dog. Try the "Huell Dog". On the corner of La Brea and Melrose.
Andersen's - Buellton - Another gem in the Santa Ynez Valley. This pea soup is to die for. Vegans will be happy, and meat eaters can get some much needed ham and bacon toppings. The soup does well on it's own though. Really.
Tommy's Loud music on main page! - Various Locations - Although there are many Tommy's restaurants scattered across Southern California, the original (and best one) is in Los Angeles on Rampart and some other street. Go for the chili cheese burger!
Portillo's - Buena Park and Moreno Valley - Chicago's very own right here in Southern California. The place is busy almost all the time. A delicious salad bar for vegans, but if you like meat have the hot dogs and Italian beef or sausage sandwiches!
Clearman's - Located in selected cities in LA and Orange County, Clearman's restaurants are home to yummy steaks (the second best steaks I've had in my life) and great salads. Salads that you get with your meal! Two of them actually (at North Woods Inn locations). Great cheese bread and huge baked potatoes too. It's plenty of $$$ but not so much that it kept me from going there at least twice a year. You can also get a great tasting cherry coke that isn't too coke, or too cherry tasting. Just perfect!
