Dad

my father just called, and thinks he may have had a heart attack early this morning while he was taking a shower.

he started out the conversation, though, by calmy discussing, at length, that link i sent him and had put up as a post here, featuring the guy that plays with your cursor - remember that one?

anyway, it took him a long time to say, "uh... look... i have a problem.. a pretty big problem actually... i think i had a heart attack."

he said he just didn't know what to do, so he went back to bed to sleep, and woke up this afternoon.

he seemed calm, and, not exactly confused (not more than usual), but he seemed lost.

he said, "my heart doctor told me to call him ... he wanted me to see him again, but i owe him a lot of money ... what medicare didn't pay... so... i don't think i can go in..."

i told him, "dad, you don't have to see the same doctor. he's not the only heart doctor in town, is he? in fact, you don't have to go to any specific doctor anyway... you just go to the emergency room, and they HAVE to take you. doesn't matter whether you have money or not."

then he said he'd been getting ready to go to his psychiatrist for his ADD meds, which are going to run out tomorrow. his psych gives him enough samples of some things to get him through the month, and would give him a prescription for the med they can't hand out.

he was obviously worried about it all running out tomorrow, and mentioned he can't call that doctor because he hasn't paid his cellphone bill (though he said he has enough cash on him to pay it), so his cellphone is cut off.

i pointed out, "you can call the doctor from the hospital. that's what the good lord invented payphones for."

and he sighed and said, "i suppose... but you never seem to be able to find payphones anywhere anymore!"

so i reminded him, "dad... hospitals always have payphones. if nowhere else in this world, a hospital emergency room will. but look... your number 1 priority right now is to get to the emergency room. once you get there, your number 2 priority is to work on the meds. if the hospital admits you, you can tell them what you're on, they'll call your psych to confirm, and they'll give you an emergency supply. or you can call the doc yourself from the waiting room and tell him what's going on."

i asked if there was someone from his apartment complex who could drive him in, and told him to call me from the hospital. then i called my sister at her work and let her know what's going on.

i then called my dad back to make sure he was going (he was waiting for a cab), and to remind him to bring my and my sister's phone numbers to the hospital (he has them on his palm pilot, he assured me).

so... the rest is waiting.
