i destroyed my camera maybe a week ago through pure stupidity - i left it outside to freeze for 2 long nights and days.

just put it down on a picnic table to help wolf when he broke through some deep snow, and completely forgot about it until my husband found it and brought it in. :/

i have been majorly, seriously, depressed ever since. i couldn't even bear to discuss it with anyone, including my husband.

my cold is getting better, but wolf is now coming down with one.

and, on top of that, i haven't discussed this either, but because wolf has been feeling nauseated (but not vomiting, and no fever or any other symptom besides mild diarrhea) after every single meal for the past couple of weeks, we took him to see his pediatrician. she listened to his stomach and said something is definitely going on (lots of bowel sounds, you know), and wants me to capture some stool and urine samples from him.

because he's been "going" at school lately, i kept him home for the next 3 days, chasing him around with the plastic cups. unfortunately, he never produced during the day (performance anxiety, maybe - though he's actually really eager to try :D), which is important as we have only a few hours to get the samples down to the lab once produced, but the lab is almost 2 hours away from us.

oh well, anyway... enough with the stool talk...

we see the rabbit hanging out in front of her new home under the chicken shed. well, it used to be the chicken shed, until the bear tore the door down and killed or chased out all the chickens. but i digress into boring stuff as usual... anyway, when i go over to fill her food bowl, i can smell a slight skunk scent. i suspect a skunk may be hibernating under or in the shed, which is probably great for the rabbit, as that means predators will most likely stay away.

wolf went out to check on her once, and he said she came up to him, licked his hand and then stood up with her little front paws resting on him (like she always used to do with us).

i don't think i'll try to catch her - i get the feeling she's probably happier outside.

and, it seems like winter is actually over. normally, our winter runs from october to april, with between 7 and 21 feet of snow falling each season. this year, though, we've only had maybe 4 feet of snow overall, only a few snow storms, and, the last couple of weeks, we've had above freezing weather every single day, making the snow melt.

the topper though, is the fact that our pond has been host to numerous canada geese and ducks the past week. and some people have reported seeing robins already. no one has ever seen these birds this early - they shouldn't be here for another 3 months!

meh.. i don't even want to admit it - i feel so incredibly stupid. :/

i let the rabbit out to run around.

forgot the back door (we have two) was open. can't even blame wolf - it was me who'd left it open hours earlier.

we figured it out right away, and wolf and i both ran ourselves to exhaustion trying to capture her again while she hopped merrily around the back 40 (note to non-english speakers: slang for back yard).

i only had regular jeans on (not protective snowpants), but at least my snow boots. no jacket, as it was a very warm day today (45 degrees fahrenheit!). but, i kept running through the deep snow, sometimes literally up to my hips, and in the end my i was worn out, frozen, covered in snow, panting, and my ankles bleeding (from the hard snow rubbing against them as i broke through again and again).

ironically, wolf fell down as he tried to run down a steep slope after the rabbit, and, as he lay there, his arms pinned under him (head down, legs up), the rabbit hopped up close to sniff his face!

we spent at least an hour chasing her. she kept coming back near us, just never near enough. sometimes i thought of just jumping on the snow, tackling her, but was too afraid i'd crush her. she ran us UP the hill and DOWN the hill, across the plain, etc... i ran and ran and ran, struggling through the deep snow every step of the way. completely out of breath...

finally, she hopped under an old gold miner's cabin (over a hundred years old) we have on our property. if she stays there, she may survive the winter, as it is up on cinder blocks and is accessible and dry underneath. we're just going to keep bringing her food, and try to find a live animal trap to try to capture her. as a domestic rabbit, especially a dark gray one who doesn't turn white during the winter like the local snowshoe hares, she doesn't have much of a chance of surviving - not with the bald eagles, mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes all around.

i reluctantly told my husband, figuring he'd think i was stupid, but also be relieved, as he had complained about the rabbit all the time we've had her, her food, her poop, her chewing up the carpet, (he also kept feeling her breastbone, grunting, "too skinny! don't you feed her enough? i can't eat her yet!" (reminding me of the witch from hansel und gretl...)) but when i told him all that, including thinking he'd be happy she was gone, he said, "i didn't mind her ... i'd gotten used to having her around!"

anyway, when i told him i was afraid our wolf-husky, who used to be a great hunter, would get her eventually, he said, "Ookami? nahh... sie's zu ald und fat zu catch a wabbit!"

and i had to chuckle, adding, "like me. :/"

anyway, wolf and i are both very, very heavy of heart tonight.
