2023 is more than halfway over, and we’re planning for Yuletide! We hope you’re looking forward to it as much as we are.
Friday 13 to Saturday 21 October: Sign-ups (end 9pm UTC 21 October)
Monday 23 October: Assignments out (may be earlier)
Monday 11 December: Default deadline (9am UTC)
Monday 18 December: Assignment deadline (9am UTC)
Monday 25 December: Main collection works reveals (9am UTC)
Tuesday 26 December: Madness collection works reveals (9am UTC)
Monday 1 January: Author reveals, end of event (9am UTC)
We’re happy to announce that it is once again time for an amnesty!
If, in any past year, you defaulted after the no-penalty deadline (generally December 11) and have not yet turned in a New Year’s Resolution story, you are welcome to participate in 2023 without writing a NYR.
Important exception: if you were asked to complete a New Year’s Resolution story for anything other than simply pressing the default button or not turning your story in, we will still ask you to complete your NYR before signing up again. For example, if you turned in an incomplete story at the deadline and were told it required an NYR, the NYR is still necessary.
If you have any questions about how this amnesty applies to you (including whether you were at any point required to do an NYR before the amnesty was granted), please email us.
We hope to welcome many of you back this year!
We realize that dropping FFN will mean that some larger fandoms which have been ineligible in the past will be eligible again. Based on how things go in 2023, we’ll evaluate what effect that has on us as a rare fandom exchange going forward, and if necessary will make other changes to eligibility requirements.
Just for your information, if we had not considered FFN last year, 14 fandoms that were rejected from nominations would have been approved. As of today, all of these fandoms are currently eligible by the new rule:
24 (TV)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Boondock Saints (Movies)
Darkwing Duck (Cartoon 1991)
Flashpoint (TV)
Gargoyles (Cartoon)
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
Lab Rats (TV 2012)
Left 4 Dead (Video Games)
Lost Girl (TV)
The Matrix (Movies)
New Girl (TV 2011)
Pride and Prejudice (TV 1995)
Roswell (TV 1999)
We are not changing the numbers used to determine eligibility for individual RPF characters. As previously, a person who is tagged in over 1,000 works in English on AO3 (of any length or completion status) is not eligible in any RPF category.
Please stay tuned for announcements and discussion about other topics later in August.

New Year's Resolution amnesty
Participants who default after the no-penalty default date in Yuletide are generally asked to write a New Year’s Resolution story before signing up again. Every so often, Yuletide mods will issue a general amnesty to those who owe a NYR story, but that hasn’t happened since 2014.We’re happy to announce that it is once again time for an amnesty!

Fandom eligibility changes: dropping fanfiction.net
We’ve made some changes to Yuletide fandom eligibility for 2023. Beginning this year, we will no longer count stories on fanfiction.net (FFN) towards the limit of 1000 eligible works for a fandom to be nominated. Fandoms will be approved if their total number of qualifying stories on archiveofourown.org (AO3) is less than 1,000. A story must be in English, complete, and at least 1,000 words long to be a qualifying story. Crossovers are included in the total. We realize that dropping FFN will mean that some larger fandoms which have been ineligible in the past will be eligible again. Based on how things go in 2023, we’ll evaluate what effect that has on us as a rare fandom exchange going forward, and if necessary will make other changes to eligibility requirements.

The latter - if the amnesty applied to you this year, that continues to be true until you come under a penalty again for a default or other reason. You're welcome to sign up next year.
