Stars
I'm trying to revive Your Indie! :)
The band: Stars
The concert: Amazing. Great stage presence. Bouncy, fun songs. My calves hurt by the end from jumping up and down the whole time.
I can't seem to find a dang official (or unofficial) website for this band.

All Hail the Death of Radio
Clear Channel suffers and rock radio is gasping its last and, more importantly, does anyone care?

Kings of Convenience
i love when something pops up when my ipod is on shuffle mode that i
forgot i even had. DLed a bunch of their tunes when i thought i might
go see 'em recently and promptly forgot.
they're quite mellow, acoustic, iron-and-wine-y. here's their website. (i overcame the laziness of not looking up the url, but only cuz i'm being lazy in regards to work at the moment!)

point of interest: the used
I am putting this here for whatever reason...
I have periodic enjoyment in listening to The Used.
Sure the lead singer's a little screechy (ok, a lot screechy), but I'd be screechy too if I had to date Ozzie's daughter.
hmm... It's like pop but the band got hit by baseball bats.

so you quote love unquote me
how can you not love the quirky and melancholy magnetic fields? the first song of theirs i ever heard was "chicken with its head cut off." awesome tune!
i saw 'em live at the birchmere in virginia in december. the show was unique and lots of fun. their lyrics are achey and sad and laugh out loud funny. tonight i watched the movie "pieces of april" which prominently featured several magnetic fields songs.
that's my recommendation du jour!

what is indie?
Thought it might be helpful to start with a definition and ask the
above question. I like the last part of the description below because
it goes beyond what type of business model the label employs. I usually
have no idea what label a band is on anyway, or how "mainstream"
something is. Do you abandon your favorite indie-label band when they
hit the bigtime and go into heavy rotation on Clear Channel or get
mentioned by a character on the OC? Should a college radio station
eschew musicians they would have otherwise adored because they happen
to be signed to a major record label?
I promise after this I will just post band suggestions. :)

Indie rock takes its name from "independent," which describes both the do-it-yourself attitudes of its bands and the small, lower-budget nature of the labels that release the music. The biggest indie labels might strike distribution deals with major corporate labels, but their decision-making processes remain autonomous. As such, indie rock is free to explore sounds, emotions, and lyrical subjects that don't appeal to large, mainstream audiences -- profit isn't as much of a concern as personal taste (though the labels do, after all, want to stay in business)....
There are almost as many reasons for that incompatibility [with mainstream music] as there are indie-rock bands, but following are some of the most common: the music may be too whimsical and innocent; too weird; too sensitive and melancholy; too soft and delicate; too dreamy and hypnotic; too personal and intimately revealing in its lyrics; too low-fidelity and low-budget in its production; too angular in its melodies and riffs; too raw, skronky and abrasive; wrapped in too many sheets of Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr./Pixies/Jesus & Mary Chain-style guitar noise; too oblique and fractured in its song structures; too influenced by experimental or otherwise unpopular musical styles. Regardless of the specifics, it's rock made by and for outsiders -- much like alternative once was, except that thanks to its crossover, indie rock has a far greater wariness of excess testosterone. It's certainly not that indie rock is never visceral or powerful; it's just rarely -- if ever -- macho about it.

My current obsession
Pirst Fost!
Anyway, this is essentially my music journal. Maybe now it's your music journal. In any case, post your new and favorites here so readers can check them out.

They're a San Diego band that's been around a while and gaining popularity among my stereos. Don't hear them on local to SF stations but Satellite's playing them as is 94.9 (listen live) in San Diego.
I'm fully obsessed.
