You are not immune to propaganda. This article has zero citations.
And as a result you are all believing some very very -very- narrow numbers.
Alabama's scores are higher than New York for 4th grade ONLY.
When we get to 8th, they lag behind. 12th grade isn't yet reported. So we do not have enough to report here.
Also CA and NY public schools -also- teach phonics based reading.
from those above articles re: Alabama
Fourth Grade Math increased by 6 points from 230 to 236, while Reading increased by 1 point from 212 to 213.
However, 8th grade Math score was 269 and Reading was 253 in 2019. Those numbers decreased to 262 in Math and 250 for Reading in 2024.
Alabama also has 8% of it's students who identify as English Learners, as opposed to CA which has 22 and New York which has 13..
What you're reading is 'Alabama kicked CA and NY's ass in education" and what is really happening is they scored 2-3 points higher on two tests for 4th grade students.\
Now, that said - please don't discount that Alabama's doing awesome things for their students. Especially their economically disadvantaged ones. They are making amazing steps! But don't believe a meme graphic without actually doing your research and stop and think about why a state like Alabama might have some different issues with teaching than CA or NY.
