As promised, we have now completely reinstalled the MUSH code on the server in the hopes of avoiding any further data loss. For the next few days, we will continue with cautious optimism...
This means: while we remain hopeful our data problems are gone, we are still recommending people keep full backups of any changes they do to their characters, objects or rooms. You can find instructions on how to create these backups in bbpost 1/69. You may, however, move forward with any major changes you were planning, such as upgrades or new rooms.
While we're in this testing mode, we ask that you please let us know about ANY weirdness you find on the game. Any commands that don't work like you think they should, anything missing that you could have sworn was there yesterday. If it gives you pause, just drop us a quick @mail to *STAFF so that we can look into it.
Thank you everyone for your continued patience. You've all been really good sports about everything and we hope that this will be the end of it and everyone can resume RP as normal.
As you may or may not notice, we've suffered some major data loss over the past 24 hours. It would appear that, for whatever reason, the game hadn't been actually writing the data to the server in over a month. As of yesterday, we've been running off of data that dates from about March 1st or 2nd.
We're currently communicating with Dune to see if anything can be done to get this information back, but the outlook is grim. However, until this has been ruled out as a possibility, we ask that you take backups of anything you do on here and keep them on your own machine because we will lose interim changes if we can go back to a previous version.
Fortunately, this has been a slow month for us (the one upshot of things being quiet around here), so we don't think we've lost too much. We're working with those who did lose data to try and come up with quick-fixes for them. If you've lost anything in the rollback, please @mail *STAFF to let us know. This will include any rooms, upgrades, objects, etc., created after March 1st.
We most sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will keep you posted as news comes in.
The Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters provides mutant teens with a top-notch formal education while also providing them a safe haven from prejudice and a place to safely learn about their powers. All that's required is that you play a teenager (13-17 years of age) who is a mutant, and is able to attend a boarding school in upstate New York (the school does not accept day students). Children of all backgrounds and financial means can find a home at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning provides safe accommodations and support to young adults, many of whom opt to continue their learning either through distance education or by commuting to one of the many schools in the city. Students are given the freedom to live their adult lives while also having access to power-training facilities as well as a fully appointed mansion. Financial aid is available to students who require it. Institute members must be 18 or over, while there is no upper age limit.
New characters may app directly into the School or Institute by explaining in their background how they found out about Xavier's (remember that the school is not currently known about publicly - more likely they will approach you). If you need any help working this into your background, please ask staff on the Guests channel or via email (xmrstaff@debbo.org). Existing unaligned or independent characters can @mail *STAFF about a recruitment scene.
If you are at the mansion and are willing to run one or more recruitment scenes, please @mail *STAFF and we will pair you up with potential recruits as they come in.
For those who haven't seen, the first installment of XMR's new Newsletter "Between the Lines" has been posted to the wiki! You can find it at the following link:
If you're interested in contributing at all for the August/September issue, please remember that the deadline is one week before the posting date (August 1st) so please have your submissions in by July 25, 2007 and remember to +bbread 1/25 on-game to see what we're looking for at this point in time.
The staff would like to extend their thanks and congratulations to all who took part in the Great RP Challenge in March.
The winner of the competitive aspect of the challenge was Tyson who managed to complete the most scenes by RPing with 7 different people. He has been awarded 20 tokens: 10 for winning and 10 for completing the challenge.
Successfully completing the challenge with five scenes each were Wanda and Emma. They were awarded 10 tokens apiece for completing the challenge.
Honourable mentions go out to Penny (4 scenes) and Jono (3 scenes). They were awarded 2 tokens each for their effort.
Look for future challenges coming soon!
Thank you, Paradigm - on behalf of the staff at XMR
(The forgotten LJ comm is getting a lot of use today.)
Just a reminder for those of you with IC LiveJournals, log LJs, etc., that you can add them to our links on the wiki here: http://xmr.dune.net/wiki/index.php… - this URL is being given to new players as the best place to find logs/IC goings on, so if you want to make sure your logs are getting seen, this is a good place to put up your link!
Also, if you would like your LJ/blog/log page listed on our main site links page (http://xmr.dune.net/800600.php?pag…) under the Character/Player Pages section, please email xmrstaff @debbo.org or @mail Paradigm on the game with your URL and page name.

We've just gotten word from our host, Dune, about some upcoming downtime which should help to make sure that the game stops going down so often.
We are upgrading the kernel on the server to version 2.6.8. This should help increase server stability and provide security fixes.
We'll be performing this maintenance at 3:00 PM MST on Thursday, December 14th. The server will be rebooted at this time; the estimated downtime is 30 minutes.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this maintenance. At dune.net, we're still committed to providing excellent quality of service. If there is anything we can do to help you, please let us know. We'd be glad to help!
As usual, our Embassy on OGR will be available for people wanting to hang out during this downtime. To get to our embassy:
1. Log on to ogrmux.com port 6700. 2. Login or create a new character at the login screen. 3. @tel to #1867 (type '@tel #1867' to jump straight to our embassy).
You can also add our channel there with 'addcom xmr=XMenRetribution' to speak with the others.
Fiver will be running a special Halloween-themed event this coming Friday, the 27th, at 6pm EST. The setup is a costume party . . . somewhere. I haven't decided yet on exactly where on the grid, might have to be the one-use room if I can't figure out an appropriate venue. The first 6 players to respond via @mail will be signed up, as per usual. Players are urged to show up in costume IC, and encouraged to use multi-descing to 'wear' their costumes. The threat level for this is Spooky. Which means it's going to be a bit of a lighter, more 'fun' scene as kind of a break from the trials and tragedy of my normal fare. I hope to see some of you there!
