I hear tell I missed a scary town, a sentient imaginary friend, and a volcano.

[There's a tilted view of a room, sparsely decorated and hushed voices can be heard from somewhere off-camera. A bed comes in to full view, the body of a petite red-headed woman, curls framing her face and a short look at her eyes - wide-open and completely white.

The body is hooked up with wires to the wall, digital equipment lines the entirety of it as the camera pans over it slowly before coming back to the still, unbreathing body on the bed.]

Doctor, you mentioned a thing called 'life support'. Is this what I'm seeing here?

[The body is quickly crowded with people, as the Darkling steps back and his face swims in to the frame. Black hair and beard, and garishly bright clothes that are much too tight but good for close-quarter combat.]

We found a body behind a hidden door in the mayor's study. Any medical expertise that could help us, would be greatly appreciated.

Without knowing for certain, it does appear to be the body of the entity we know as Viveca on the station - the curly hair, the freckles as well as several photographs of the same woman, only younger.

So, thought I'd better introduce myself just so you all know who I am - I'm Rodimus from Cybertron, also an Autobot! Captain of the Lost Light, savior of the galaxy, you know. All that stuff.

Don't let the Cybertronian thing freak you out, I'm not one of those "crush all organics" types! Love organics. Some of my favorite people are organics.

Even been to Earth! Great music.

That...that could have gone exponentially worse for a proxy war designed with suffering in mind. Bittersweet as it was, I hope everyone is well. I'm sorry our little jailbreak went to pot, but I figured I was most helpful in ferrying the ones caught in the crossfire as fast as possible.

This brings me to why I'm bothering you all in this period of convalescence.

Would anyone unfamiliar with cars or have never had the opportunity be interested in learning how to drive? The simulation room has limited space, but it should be adequate to go over the basics and give anyone willing something to keep their mind off things. I know it sounds trivial but if I'm, god forbid, incapacitated on a mission, I'd like there to be an easy escape or — and please don't unless you're pulling a hail mary — a battering ram out of a dangerous situation. Knowing the bare minimum is infinitely better than nothing.

Not everyone's introduction to vehicles here has been overall pleasant, and I'd like to correct that.

[At first, there's no commentary- just a video feed from the throne room. Sabriel's voice can be heard- both aloud, speaking to the Highest One, and a mental voice, which is considerably more emotional- controlled yes, but clearly furious.]

This whole war was a set up. 'He' and the Highest one- They were the same person all along. And V'rizz was in on it. Someone needs to tell Entr'i and Angrial.

[Comments from Sabriel will be sparse- feel free to use this to react/comment among yourselves.]
bindsthedead: (art-cause for concern)
[personal profile] bindsthedead
This is Sabriel. Xichen, Alina, Rhys and I did some investigating, and I'd like to share what we found, along with my own thoughts.

We know that Entr'i has an orb, and wishes to merge Taeum and Sedorum... and frankly, I think that really is the best course of action. My suggestion is that we offer our assistance in that goal, in exchange for the orb. It's a strategy we've employed successfully in the past, and to be honest- I want to help Entr'i anyway. Unlike everyone else in charge, she seems to care about people, regardless of whether they're in Taeum or Sedorum.

[Entr'i has the cause that Sabriel sees as the most just, and is the person most concerned with justice that she's met in this world. The Highest One seems most concerned with their own sanctimony, and as for 'Him', well...]

There is a problem though. Xichen, Alina, Rhys and myself worked together- Xichen and I spoke to Entr'i, and Alina and Rhys tailed V'rizz. We wanted to learn more of Him and the Highest One.

What we found is that the oldest memory of either of them dates back to little over a hundred years ago- there are no souls who have been in either realm longer than that, and any older souls have since moved on. There is no memory or record extending past that, and it's possible that neither realm is as ancient as they seem- orbs are involved, after all.

But what's worse- V'rizz and He are planning to betray Entr'i. From what was overheard... Entr'i and the Highest Ones both have orbs, though they called them 'amulets'. The reason Entr'i was forbidden from killing the Highest One was because He didn't want her to have the entire orb and become too powerful. So they're planning on waiting until Entr'i kills the highest one and collects- and then kill her while she's weakened, so He can have both. Obviously, we warned her about this- Entr'i's the only person in this world who I'd trust to hold an Orb- the Highest One is a hypocrite who doesn't care about people suffering, and 'He' is no better.

Let me repeat- we have warned Entr'i about this and offered our help. Let's trust her to act as she deems best with that information.

[And oocly, see what the mods say in response to the followup search request.]

Of course, that also raises the question of how to collect both orbs and get back to the station. If we side with Entr'i, given her plan seems to involve obtaining both orbs, we could request both in exchange for helping her, taking them back with us after her bargain is concluded.

However, we don't know what Entr'i's bargain is- Entr'i does not seem the sort to use innocents as collateral, and she's not displaying any of the symptoms So'Yeon did in Gyeonje, so I don't think she's using herself as a sacrifice either. I suspect her wish is to merge Taeum and Sedorum, I just don't know how how she's planning to pay for it.

[Sabriel actually has her own theory about Entr'i's bargain- one she'll supply if asked, but it's too optimistic to voice. Besides, there's still another person with an orb- one far less benevolent than Entr'i

There's a long moment of silent hesitation, as Sabriel remembers the previous mission, the way everything had fallen apart, the town dissolving to nothing but ruins and death, pervaded by a cold that stuck to her bones, even in the heat of the day. And she thinks of Gyeonje, of people twisted into monsters, slowly losing their minds because of one man's selfishness.]

I have no evidence either way, so what follows is purely speculation, but if this 'Highest One' made a bargain with the orb to create Taeum's present state, it is possible that there was a condition that souls from Sedorum, or perhaps simply that 'sinners' not be allowed in.

[This could explain the absolute refusal to compromise, in any way. Or they're just a bunch of hypocritical snobs. Really, Sabriel could believe either, given everything she's heard.]

It is also possible that the Highest One is somehow using Taeum's inhabitants as payment- as the ruler of that realm, the orb would consider the denizens theirs to bargain with. The problem with that theory is that there's no clear sign of that happening- no crewmember in Taeum has reported people disappearing, unless Taeum's 'quick return to the Giva' is really a cover for something more sinister.

But regardless of what bargain the Highest One made, we need to get that orb, along with Entr'i's, and there are multiple ways we might do so.

Simply stealing it is off the table, as we learned in Braccia that physical possession of the orb is not enough, unless we want to play keep-away while they chase us until they give up, or hope that the Highest one is actually far more reasonable than we've been led to believe and we can reason with them.

[So not really an option, unless the crew is feeling either wildly optimistic or incredibly masochistic.]

We might also try to understand the bargain made, and use some clause in it to end it- this is what we did during the last mission, albeit unintentionally. Except we don't know for sure what bargain was made with the orb, or what the cost was, so this method is also unlikely to work.

The final possibility is we help Entr'i do what she wants, and kill the Highest One. One problem with this, as seen from the mission in Braccia, is that owners of the orbs can be incredibly powerful- we would need to send our strongest, and it might not be enough. And I know some of you object to killing, but this isn't someone like Welford Branson, an innocent who made a bargain he didn't fully understand out of grief- this is someone even worse than Cheruvia, someone who's been maintaining an unjust system even when given the chance to reform it. We just need to keep Entr'i safe in the aftermath, and make sure V'rizz and his master don't lay their hands on the orb. I think this option has the best chance of success, and is the one I support.

[Mostly because Sabriel likes Entr'i, and has little love for the powers of both Sedorum and Taeum. The fact that it also seems the most likely to result in mission success is a happy bonus.]

So, to summarize all that, I think we should help Entr'i kill the Highest One, collect both orbs and merge Taeum and Sedorum, and make sure the forces on either side don't try to stop or sabotage her.

[ it comes late in the night while she's slumped in a chair at a strategist's table, though time is meaningless in the hellish pits of an afterlife. sedorum's frenzied chaos is neverending, a constant clash of noise that isn't unlike alina's mind, as she stares at the tactical notes laid out in front of her without truly seeing them.

Even in hell, workplace politics find a way.

Keeping this to text because I don't want any potential leads we've gathered being jeopardized if V'rizz or Entr'i figure out we've been spying on them.

Right now, there's an apparent schism between them that could work for or against depending on how deep it runs. Yelena and I managed to overhear their in-fighting, and it seems Entr'i wants to assassinate someone called 'the Highest One.'

She also doesn't seem to vibe with this mysterious Him that V'rizz is so devoted to.

My money's on either of these Vaguest Ones is our orb, and Entr'i is the horse to bet on to hop the fence.

Thoughts? I need us all sharing and caring with information before we go gatecrashing this gentrified heaven of theirs.

... This is bullshit, y'know.

[Luckily, Ziggy is not in the infirmary. She's not at her best, and she's still a bit underweight from all those weeks of working hard with little food, but she's not really hurt. Despite this, she hasn't been out of her room much. In fact, she's been... barely out at all. To collect food and leave, maybe.

Nothing like trapping yourself with your own thoughts to really have a good time.]

I killed people on that planet. I did it to protect me or my team, but I still just — I killed people. And everyone else, they killed a lot of people, too. I've never killed someone before, and now I've shot more than one person dead.

... Spare me the kneejerk reaction of 'life's unfair' or 'grow a thicker skin' or whatever. I've heard that plenty growing up. I know there's tons of people who deal with it like any other Friday night. I know saying anything doesn't matter, because we've got to do what we have to do, and the orbs are evil, awful curses on the people who come in contact with them.

But I killed people. They were bad people, and that helps, but it doesn't — make it go away. It's just... Wherever we go, we're always going to be unsafe, and scared, and we can't trust anyone. Not even each other, right? Because we don't even know what kind of people are really here. You could think someone's nice and then they're just... not. They could turn on you for whatever. And people, they wouldn't even know. They'd think you just died on a mission; they'd just move on and forget you. People might be more than happy to walk over you to undo their regrets.

People've said we can just leave, but... that's a load of shit, too. Who's gonna leave if they're told leaving means their family stays dead? Their friends? Some people don't even have a choice. For some people, if they leave, they just die. So how do we even know? That any of this matters? The orbs are going to punish us, too. They'll turn on us for being stupid enough to make deals with them.

[She runs her hands over her face, red hair falling around her face.]

I'm — I don't know. I'm not even supposed to be here. But who else is going to save a bunch of kids nobody ever gave a shit about? Nobody else is gonna save us but ourselves.

[Glancing aside, she folds her hands defensively.]

... Happy Valentine's Day. Enjoy the chocolates. I'm going to sit this holiday out, thanks.

Guys, is it just me or does anyone else just like...not give a shit anymore? Like this is crazy, right? ( Good morning, shit sucks, what else is new. He's all-business, and all-pissed-off for them, any of his earlier levity gone: )

This is McCoy. I've completed my analysis of the food here. Not easy, as whatever seems to be affecting Kaidan's equipment is also affecting mine.

Everything we've been fed here has no nutrients. Scans I've taken of myself show acute malnutrition, which I can only assume are reflected in the rest of Group One's organic folks. Though we all lack physical symptoms, I'm not keen to test the limits of whatever potentially-orb-wrought horseshit's making us feel fine, and I don't want us to all collapse from organ failure when we get back to the station.

( A crack spiderwebs through his voice, but it's gone in his next breath. )

I've prepared emergency supplement packs for all of Group One who will need them. They should get you back to baseline, or as close to it, taken in tandem with meals every other day. You can pick them up in the clinic even if I'm not here. Group Two can pick theirs up starting Saturday, and Group Three the day after that. ( McCoy's tone turns severe: ) These packs are in limited supply, and have been made to address the specific nutrient losses of each group, not for distributing to your friends. If you think I'm talking about you, then I sure as Hell am.

I've also discovered that none of the animals here can serve as a viable food replacements-- eggs, chicken, mutton; there are no vitamins, minerals, no protein, no calories.

Those who brought rations with you, stick to eating them. If you have enough to share these next few weeks without harming yourself, do so. Unfortunately, I will have to ask everyone else to continue eating what's available to us. Not eating at all is not an option-- you might starve for real, as I won't have enough supplies left to keep your stubborn hide alive.

I'm not gonna sugarcoat this, once those packs are gone, that's it. Conserve your energy. Stretch what food supplies you do have. If you find yourself feeling weak or dizzy, comm me immediately. If I find out anything else, I'll let you all know.

If anyone is investigating the mines, be careful around the ore they take out of there. My co-workers at the Trading Post have warned me that it's very dangerous. I tried to confirm this by scanning some with my omni-tool but it doesn't even register that there's something physically there when I try. And my tool does work-- I tested it on a chair just to make sure and the readings were normal.

But back on the subject. They tell me that the ore is made into something they call "pulsefire". All three of my co-workers agree it's nothing good. One of them said that if you use it as flint, it'll create a pulsefire storm "as big as a whole town" and then said it killed her grandmother. Another told me that it's "pure evil" and "only kills living things in its path".

Has anyone else come across this "pulsefire" in their investigation? I would suggest trying to sprinkle it into your conversations with the locals and gauge their reaction. The comment on a storm "as big as a whole town" really set off alarm bells, considering everything else we've discovered so far.

There's also something else that's been troubling me. Whatever is happening is affecting our technology and even our perception. Words blur and start to look like gibberish if we focus on it for too long. My omni-tool didn't register the ore as a physical object and when I tried later, it just turned off. And of course we have the locals who repeat themselves or just look blank if we ask them certain questions. It feels... too familiar to things I've seen back home. I don't like it. I really, really don't like it.

Now that the holidays seem to be over, I am curious.

When we were allowed into the North Wing, did anyone else get to speak with Commander Degar? I did and he confirmed that every orb has a different personality and that it tends to correspond with their color.

He also told me the ones we have met so far have been some of the nicer ones and we should be careful going forward. That feels kind of ominous, doesn’t it? It felt ominous to me.

[She sighs and continues:]

Basically, I can’t help but but wonder if the next mission might end up being more stressful and unpleasant than usual, especially after all of this downtime we’ve had. So I thought it might be a good idea to share with the rest of the class.

Hi, all. [ luke appears to be wearing a plaid shirt that he definitely borrowed from dean someone else, the sleeves rolled up his forearms. he's stopped wearing the glove on his right hand, so the bare durasteel of his prosthetic is visible as he lifts it for a short two-fingered wave. ] From what I've heard of missions here, things can get a little.. tense, even afterward, so..

[ he presses his fingers together lightly in his lap, lips quirking up at the corner. ]

I've been thinking about teaching an informal weekly--as permitted--active meditation class. Of sorts. If people would enjoy something like that. It wouldn't be physically taxing, but it would involve moving, so I think it would probably be best to do it in the training room if we do it.

[ he pauses thoughtfully, blowing a few strands of hair out of his eyes. ]

I guess.. this is just a head count? If you'd be interested in taking part, let me know. And if you have ideas for other things you'd like to learn that someone might reasonably be able to teach here, this might be the time and place to talk about it.
