Very Sincerely Yours

it's been a million years (eleven months) since I posted anything here - I'm alive and well but have been working on other projects, including a graphic novel that I think will appeal to enjoyers of Watson's Sketchbook (more information on that...later). To tide you over, here's a little pre-Reichenbach snippet, made on the theme of 'Home' for the Very Sincerely Yours zine @very-sincerely-yours-zine - thank you for asking me to participate! On the discussion of book accurate depictions of Sherlock Holmes, one thing I really want is accurate Mycroft. In the books Sherlock is very… autistically coded. At least to me, an autistic person. And Sherlock basically states that Mycroft has more “severe” autism. Sherlock says his brother is more brilliant than he is but absolutely cannot function in society and hates social interaction so much he founded a society for the purpose of minimizing it as much as possible. In addition it’s implied he becomes overstimulated so easily he has to curate his environment to be devoid of disturbance and noise.

Give me the autistic brothers but one has it much much worse

Enough of this Mycroft as the more sociable of the two who is a powerful politician. This man would have a meltdown if he had to be that social!!!

Mycroft goes one (1) place and then goes home, at the same time every day, and does not talk to anyone if he can avoid it, and is really good with facts and figures. Given the state of mental health research in the late 1800s, Mycroft is possibly the most autistic a character could be. And he's HAPPY - do you know how rare that is in fiction about autistic people? Sherlock is super clear about this: Mycroft does his Mycroft things, and has no desire to do any other things, and everyone is super grateful for him being himself and sorting out all their facts for them.

Obviously we only meet him in the stories when he's been forced to Get Up And Go Do Something because of circumstances (that's how adventure stories work, after all) but the majority of the time, Mycroft is having a great time looking out the window and not talking to anyone. Good for him, I say

matsu walk!!!!!!!!!!! i want to get better at pixel art, & i want to get back into animation, so the sextuplets are my muses once again :D

their walking styles are based off of hesokuri wars' sprites, so choromatsu's arms are out and jyushi is swinging his. i made suujimatsu's legs a little more reserved/exaggerated respectively + jyushimatsu bounces one pixel lower to make him look more energetic!!

in a way john watson is a fantasy (what if you had this brilliant enigmatic friend and what if he liked you in particular and what if he offered you the excitement of youth and adventures and a way out of boring society life and all without having to actually give up your status as a gentleman so you could have the best of both worlds) and in a way sherlock holmes is a fantasy (what if someone never got tired of you despite your various strange habits and mood swings and instead of simply tolerating you they genuinely liked you and what if you didn’t have to live alone forever and what if you never had to give up doing the things you love) and of course there’s the most fantastical part of it all (what if you could afford london housing prices)

so i don't remember if ive ever shared this but an incredible consequence of reading Sherlock Holmes as a kid was me imagining them as even gayer than they are in canon.

so here's the deal, when i'd asked my mother what a "dressing gown" was, she explained to me that it was basically a bathrobe. so, my knowledge of bathrobes being 'clothes you put on your naked body after a shower as a comfortable alternative to a towel', my mind of course conjured Holmes and Watson walking around their flat in nothing other than a dressing gown on. like this:

and kid me went "huh, that's awfully intimate. theyre definitely SOME sort of great friends." I am honestly pretty ashamed to admit i only realized they actually wore normal clothes under their dressing gowns when i started searching for Sherlock Holmes fanart and saw people drawing it. oops.
