PlayStation Blackout August 23rd-30th
Just letting all my followers know that there is a planned blackout of PlayStation consoles on August 23rd at 7pm (Your local time) to August 30th at 7pm.
This is to protest Sony's plan of discontinuing physical game disc production of all PS5 games early 2028, as they plan for PlayStation 6 to be a digital-only console with a closed market with no way to trade, sell or refund your games, with Sony having complete control of how, when and for how long you are able to access your purchases which will also be at the mercy of internet and server accessibility.
The goal of this blackout, and all protests to Sony, is not get them to rescind their plans of converting their disc factories to factories for manufacturing micro-lenses for AI Data Centers (achieving this would be more of a bonus than anything), but to make them and their stock holders nervous, send a message to competitors like Nintendo that physical media is still valued and we will not stand for this anti-consumer monopoly that Sony is trying to establish, and teach others of what they stand to lose should they continue to put their faith and money in to Playstation, that digital "purchases" are actually closer to renting or licensing a game than owning a product.
This is also a reminder than PC storefronts like Steam and GoG are competitively priced, preserves older games, offer better selections, better protections for the games you buy and better ownership rights, free online multiplayer, modding, trading, ect.
Things that PlayStation does not offer and has no plans to offer for PlayStation 6, which is likely to focus heavily on a subscription-based service with ads and will possibly be entirely cloud-based in the future (which means absolutely nothing will be stored on your console and no preservation whatsoever).
I will be disconnecting my PlayStation 4 and 5 from their power and ethernet cables for 1 week starting August 23rd at 7pm my own time, and if you care about the future of gaming and preservation of the games and art we all love, I highly encourage you to do the same.
If it doesn't work, then we have lost nothing - But if it does, then we have made a difference and given the future of gaming a better chance.
Thanks for reading this, and spread it around or tell your friends if you can!
(Again, not my usual kind of post but this is important to me and weighs heavily on my mind these days)
