- Before Prohibition, drinking was casual, omnipresent, and unremarkable. You drank at breakfast, at lunch, at work, after work, and on Sunday. Prohibition interrupted that normalization. That interruption was valuable in itself.
- The WCTU's vision of a sober world was not utopian. It was practical. Remove the largest preventable source of poverty and domestic violence. See what the family looks like without alcohol eating it from the inside.
- The Anti-Saloon League lobbied successfully in 46 states. This was not achieved through deception or manipulation. It was achieved through organizing the most motivated constituency in American politics: people who had been hurt by alcohol.
- Alcohol impairs judgment at blood alcohol levels below the legal intoxication threshold. This means people who feel sober are often impaired. Prohibition addressed the full spectrum of impairment, not just visible drunkenness.
