From 15 Nov we will no longer be posting here. Follow us for nature & history of science on Bluesky bit.ly/LinnBluesky, and as @LinneanSociety on Instagram or Facebook . This is in response to T&C changes which are incompatible with our values. Thanks and see you elsewhere.

268 years ago, on this day, Species Plantarum was published (1753). Written by Carl Linnaeus, it is the basis for binomial nomenclature of plants. Published in Stockholm in two volumes, it classifies plants according to Linnaeus’ sexual system. #taxonomy

For #BurnsNight2019 we've found this beautiful hand-coloured plate of thistles. Believed to have hung on Linnaeus' wall, the plate was given to Linnaeus by Johannes Gessner c.1764 linnean-online.org/165114/

Alfred Russel Wallace—naturalist, explorer, and social campaigner—was born #OTD in 1823. Alongside Darwin, he introduced the world to the theory of evolution by means of natural selection, in joint papers first presented at the Linnean Society in 1858. Happy 199th birthday, ARW!

📢 Help keep the Society at Burlington House! Due to unaffordable and rapidly rising rent, the Society is at risk of being priced out of its home. Today, we join our neighbours in a campaign to find an affordable arrangement with the Government. Thread ⬇️ #LinneanAtBH 1/8

Anna Atkins, pioneering botanist and photographer, was born #OTD in 1799. Her stunning, sky-blue Photographs of British Algae (1843) revolutionised natural history illustration. The Linnean Society Library holds one of only a handful of copies in existence. #LinneanAtBH

Naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian was born #OTD in 1647. Her close observation of insect metamorphosis was decades ahead of its time. The @LinneanSociety copy of her Insects of Surinam has been annotated with cross-references to Carl Linnaeus' specimen collection. #LinneanAtBH

From our Linnean Lens event today (probably the most beautiful!). One of our most beautiful books is also its least well-known - The Reverend Richard Dreyer’s copy of Flora Britannica (1800-1804) with its luminous marginal illustrations. A taste here. @WillBeharrell @isacharmant
