Wellesley College’s radio station (then known as WBS 730) had its first broadcast on April 20th, 1942, featuring radio plays, Porgy and Bess, a quiz show, and the news. More than half a century later, Wellesley College radio has continued to expand both creatively and technologically while maintaining its distinctive position as the longest running independent women’s radio station in the United States.
Mission Statement
WZLY is committed to the promotion of diverse and independent music. WZLY encourages all its station members to play material which receives little airplay from commercial radio stations. As a result, the music played on WZLY is not heard anywhere else in the area, rendering our radio station unique in its music and sound.
