Where on the internet (ideally in the UK) can one buy newly released DVDs that isn't Amazon? I've been looking for somewhere to get the new Attenborough series (Wild Isles) once it's out, but... the BBC online shop is only available in North America, the supermarkets have stopped selling DVDs as far as I can tell (or mine has, anyway), and Fopp / HMV are pretty much in-store only. There's places I know that do second-hand, but that won't help when there's not even a release date yet, and my non-Amazon new book vendors don't seem to do DVDs. I'm sure there must be someone out there!
make do and mend
Mar. 10th, 2023 11:10 amOne of my birthday presents was a pack of panda buttons which my mother allegedly "couldn't resist" (I can't blame her; they are extremely cute) so I've been thinking about what to do with them. I'd like to put them on a shirt, and I think it should be either a plain black or a plain white shirt for maximum suitability - but right now I only have one of each, and I want to keep them plain because sometimes I need a plain shirt for something (e.g. a concert somewhere other than my usual choir, which gives us uniform shirts to wear). My usual shirt vendors are coming up blank on actual plain basics right now, so apparently my plans are on hold until they come back into fashion! Of course we'll also have to wait and see whether I ever have enough enthusiasm to replace an entire shirt's worth of buttons at once...
I like the idea of mending clothes, but in practice it doesn't really work out for me. I've sewn lots of buttons back on, and a couple of small patches as button backings, but other than that by the time something needs fixing, it's usually too hard. My trousers usually wear on the inner thigh first, but it's the whole of the inner thigh, so you can't patch holes when they wear through because there's nothing solid enough to attach the patch to unless you replace half the garment; my work shirts tend to start fraying at the collar and cuffs, and usually at all of them at once, so even if I did know how to fix that it would be a big piece of work; my t-shirts develop little pinholes around where my trouser hardware contacts them, and I don't think there's any way to fix that sort of thing in knitted jersey material where the stitches are too tiny to darn even if I had the skill. But other people do seem to do cool mending stuff, so am I a) too lazy / intimidated or b) wearing the wrong sort of clothes??
I don't think I'm particularly wasteful with clothing, so I don't feel all that bad about it, but I do wonder if I'm missing something.

distant drama
Sep. 10th, 2020 09:45 amI get occasional emails from the management agency for the block I live in, and it's always entertaining - clearly there's DRAMA going on, but I've missed all of it. The last three:
- Stop putting big items in the bin stores! The bin lorries won't take them!
- Stop phoning the out-of-hours emergency number because your neighbours are shouting at each other again!
- Stop leaving your garages unlocked so that car thieves can use them as chop shops!
Mostly I just feel consciously virtuous about the fact I'm not doing any of the things they're talking about (although the garage one did get me to work out which garage was mine and successfully get into it, only 2 1/2 years after moving in... fortunately it didn't contain any chop shops, just cobwebs and dead leaves). It makes a nice change from their usual letters, which involve me giving them lots of money.
