This profile is part of the Sumner Name Study.

William Sumner Jr. was baptized December 6, 1629 in Bicester, England, the son of William and Mary Sumner.[1]

He married Elizabeth Clement, who was the daughter of Augustine Clement of Dorchester. [1] Elizabeth was baptized on March 2, 1633/4 at St. Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire, England. [2]

In her father's Augustine Clement's will, written on January 31, 1671 and proved on October 31, 1674, he directed son Samuel to pay my daughter Elizabeth Sumner L10 plus L4 yearly and to each of her children, being Hannah, William, Sarah, Experience, Elinor, Deliverance and Clement - L10 each at the age of 21 or the daughters at marriage. [2]

He was a mariner and moved to Boston from Dorchester where he and Elizabeth raised their family of ten children.

William Sumner had died before his father made his will on March 1, 1688/9.[1]Page 2 of "Record of the Descendants of William Sumner, of Dorchester, Mass., 1636" says he died in February of 1675.[3]

I sourced wife Clement-1905. I have some doubts about the children. Posted a section of Augustine Clements 1671/2 will; naming daughter Elizabeth Sumner and her children Hannah, William, Sarah, Experience, Eben=ezer, Deliverance and Clement. Mercy wasn't born yet. He does not list any daughters Elizabeth or Mary, supposedly eldest children of Will and Eliz (from NEHGR: 8) https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/suffolk-county-ma-probate-file-papers/image?pageName=708:3&volumeId=48697&rId=69447404

William Sr. 1688 left bequests to nine children of son William. https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-immigrants-to-new-england-1634-1635-volume-vi-r-s/image?pageName=600&volumeId=12124&rId=23901680

[Steading] in Berkshire is purportedly the origin point for the family of his wife, but her family was in New England by 1635; unlikely that bride and groom returned to the bride's purported birthplace to marry.

Also, didn't see the note below to Chris re merging the two wives before I also requested the merge.

As noted, first child born at Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Marriage place looks like an error to me.

I just was adding a possible related death. But now I am really confused. If wife Elizabeth born c1633/4, came to Massachusetts with her parents on the James in 1635, and William and Elizabeth's 1st child was bapt. at Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1652, why is their marriage noted in England?

Thanks Chris. If you’re on this, I will leave merge of wives with you also. Merge should be PPPd to go toward Clement-1905 since her name and father’s name was Clement, not Clements. See GMD and GM Augustine Clement. Thanks much.

? Possible death

An Elizabeth Sumner of Boston was granted admin of her late husband William's estate on May 27, 1675. Suffolk County, MA: Probate File Papers: Case 737: p. 1-3 https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/suffolk-county-ma-probate-file-papers/image?pageName=737:3&volumeId=48697&rId=69447541

I did a small amount of work on this profile prior to merge. added sources, fixed b & d. dates.

this William's daughters married in Massachusetts. I added Massachusetts as uncertain place of death based on that information (I'm trying to separate two William Sumner families of the same timeframe - late 1600s: one of Massachusetts & one of Maryland; there's also a William Sumner of Virginia around that time)
