Biography
Origin
Gregory was christened on 19 April 1592, at Great Bromley, Essex, England, son of David Stone.[1][2] He was the youngest of David Stone's eleven children, the first seven by his first wife, Elizabeth Hewett, and the other four by his second wife, Ursula Unknown.[2]
Evidently the date of his christening was unknown to the descendants who erected a memorial stone at the Old Burial Ground in Cambridge, because they placed the date of his birth as 1590.[3]
Gregory received at least some education in England, more than was customary for a yeoman and husbandman.[2] He signed his deeds and will, and his estate included "a Bible and psalm book" as well as "three printed books."[1] Unfortunately no record of his younger years has survived.
Immigration
Gregory and his brother Deacon Simon Stone emigrated to America about the same time, about 1635, although Gregory's ship is not known. He was accompanied by his wife Lydia (the widow Cooper), and six children: John, born about 1619, Daniel, David, Elizabeth, Sarah and Samuel, together with two children of Mrs. Stone by her first husband. He initially settled at Watertown where he received freemanship on 25 May 1636, and then later settled in Cambridge while Simon remained at Watertown. Although their homes were within different town boundaries, they were only a mile apart. Deacon Stone became prominent both in church and state at Cambridge. [4]
Marriages and Children
Gregory married twice.
- He married on 20 July 1617 at Nayland, Suffolk, England, to Margaret Garrad, daughter of Thomas Garrad.[5]Margaret was buried 4 August 1626 at Nayland.[6]
- He married by 1628, as his 2nd wife the widow Lydia (Unknown) Cooper.[2][1] She died on 24 June 1674 at Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1] She had at least two children by her first husband, evidently a Mr. Cooper (he is not known to have been named John).[2]

Death and Legacy
Gregory died on November 30, 1672, in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[14][15] He wrote his will on 22 November 1672, and it was proved on 14 December 1672.[16][1]
Memorial Window
On 29 April 29 1904, a stained-glass window was installed at St. George's Church in Great Bromley, England "in memory of Gregory and Simon Stone, was unveiled and dedicated in the church, funds for its execution and installation having been raised among their descendants in America, through the Stone Family Association. The memorial is located in the window of the north aisle nearest the chancel. ... The inscription on the window reads: 'Saecula praeterita in 'Saecula ventura.' (The Generations pass into the coming Generations.) A metal plate below the window is inscribed: ‘To the Glory of God and to the Memory of Simon and Gregory Stone, Brothers, who were born in this Parish, baptized in this Church, and emigrated to Massachusetts in New England in 1635, this Window is erected by American Descendants."[17][18]
