Biography

Mary Snow was born probably about 1630 at Plymouth Colony, the daughter of Nicholas Snow and his wife, Constance (Hopkins) Snow.^[1] She married Thomas Paine sometime before April 1651.^[1]

1. Mary Paine, (eldest child)^[1][2] married first James Rogers;^[2][3] married second 24 April 1679 Israel Cole;^[2][3] died before 21 January 1723/4^[4]
2. Samuel Paine, born about 1652;^[1] married 31 January 1682 Patience Freeman^[2][3] (see research notes); died 13 October 1712^[2]
3. Thomas Paine, born about 1656/7;^[1] married first 5 August 1678 Hannah Shaw;^[5][6] married second 8 March 1714/5 Elizabeth Tolman;^[7][8] died 23 June 1721^[9]
4. Elisha Paine, aka Eleazer, born 10 March 1658;^[1][10] married 20 January 1685 Rebecca Doane;^[2] died 7 February 1736^[2]
5. John Paine, born 14 March 1660/1;^[1] married first Bennett Freeman;^[3][11] married second Alice Mayo;^[3][11] died 26 October 1731^[11]
6. Nicholas Paine, married about 1699 Hannah Higgins;^[3][12] died before 16 January 1733^[12]
7. James Paine, born 6 July 1665;^[1] married 9 April 1691 Bethiah Thacher;^[3][13] died 12 November 1728^[14]
8. Joseph Paine, born after April 1666;^[1] married 27 May 1691 Patience Sparrow;^[15][16] died 1 October 1712^[17][18]
9. Dorcas Abigail Paine, married about 1689 Benjamin Vickery;^[3][19] d. 30 Oct 1707^[19]

There is little other record of Mary Snow Paine, but she was said to have been a "faithful wife, a careful mother, a good and quiet neighbor, and a diligent reader of God's Holy Word." Her son, Deacon John Paine , wrote of her last hours and death in his diary, as follows: "On the 28th day of April, 1704, my honoured mother, Mary Paine, departed this life, being suddenly taken and struck with death, she having been in reasonable health all day, was taken ill about sunset so she never after spoke reasonable but decaying gradually gave up the Ghost about the dawning of the day..."^[20] Mary (Snow) Paine predeceased her husband Thomas by several years.^[1]

Research Notes

Massachusetts Marriage Records have as the recorded date of Samuel Paine and Patience Freeman's marriage 31 January 1689.^[21] The original record for their marriage can be seen in the Eastham VRs, and the marriage year is 1682.^[22]
