Ugolino di Segni was born in the hills east-southeast of Rome at Anagni in the province of Frosinone, Roman Empire.[1] His birth date is unknown, possibly around 1145 or before 1170.[2] He is also known as Ugolino di Conti.[2]
He was consecrated bishop around 1206 and created cardinal in December 1198.[2]
St Francis of Assisi requested that he be appointed as Cardinal Protector of the order of the Franciscans in 1220.[2]
He was elected pope on 19 March 1227 and crowned on 21st March 1227 taking the name Gregory IX.[1]
He established the Papal Inquisition in 1233 to regularize the persecution of heresy.[2] As a learned and skillful lawyer he brought about a number of reforms on Papal legal theory.[2]
Among the saints he canonised were Elisabeth of Hungary, Dominic, Anthony of Padua and Francis of Assisi.[2]
He died on 22 August 1241.[2][1]
