Biography
Carl Schuhmann was a German athlete who competed in 4 different sports in the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He was part of the German Olympic Gymnastics Team and took gold in the vault and the team parallel bars and horizontal bars. He won another gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling. He also took part in weightlifting (4th place), triple jump (5th place), long jump and shot put. He was the most successful athlete at the Athens Games, and until today is one of only three athletes who competed in 4 different sports at the same Olympics.[1][2][3][4]

Family
Karl August Berthold Schuhmann was born on 12 Mai 1869 in Münster, the son of Stabs-Trompeter August Schuhmann and Bertha (Gillen) Schuhmann.[12] He married Luise Charlotte Wittzang on 20 May 1899 in Berlin. At the time of his marriage he was living in London. [13] Karl and Luise had at least five children together:

In 1901, Karl was a gymnastics instructor living in Hornsey, Middlesex, England with his wife Luise and their one year old daughter Charlotte. [14]
In 1911 he was still a gymnastics instructor, living in Hornsey with Luise, their five children and a 32 year old boarder named Wilhelm Hocke. [15]
He died on 24 Mar 1946 and was buried at Waldfriedhof Heerstrasse in Charlottenburg, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin.
Carl was mentioned on a memorial in Waldfriedhof Heerstrasse, Charlottenburg, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin, Germany with a death date of 24 March 1946.[20]
