Hughey Name Study

How to Join

Please contact the coordinator Debbie Parsons or post a comment at the foot of the page. If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks!

The surname HUGHEY originally appeared in Gaelic as "O hEochaidh" or "Mac Eochaidh," derived from an Irish personal name "Eachaidh," meaning a "horseman."

The surname HUGHEY. originated in Scotland between the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 and before the arrival of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes from mainland Europe. The name comes from the Brythonic word for "fire." The four surviving sons of the assassinated king of Mercia fled to Scotland and formed the Hughey family there. Many Hughey's in later periods emigrated to Ulster from Scotland and may not be related at all to the descendants of the Irish Hughey's descended from Eachaidh. Anyway, these Hughey's are Scots Gaelic and not Irish Gaelic.

Well, i reckon I should after all.
David, I went through all the profiles with the Hughey surname and added the Hughey Surname Study tag with the exception of the ones I did not have access to. I also edited this page so that the format for adding the tag is shown.

Tanya

Hello. My mother's maiden name was Hughey. Her family is from Taney County, Missouri, and before that from Arkansas, before that from Tennessee. I have heard before of the legend of fours sons of a murdered Mercian king who fled to Scotland (on Ancestry.com).

I wonder if anyone knows the name of the king who was murdered or of his sons? I had a great-uncle named James Offa Hughey, therefore I'm giving some credence to the Mercian background of the Hughey family.

Hi Karen. I was told in the Huey/Hughey name group on FamilyTreeDNA.com to be leery of the 4 sons theory. Have you DNA tested yet?? I hope you do at some point. That group of Hughey bloodlines is growing strong. Please join us when you DNA test.

Debbie Hughey Parsons

Karen, I think we are third cousins. My grandfather was James Alva Hughey and his brothers were my great uncles and the oldest was Offa Howard Hughey. What was your grandmother’s first name. Was her father Lank Hughey and her mother a Richardson?
