Biography

Eagle in Seward, Alaska
Bartley McRorie is an Alaskan.

Bartley McRorie lives the retired life in Anchorage, Alaska.

As an amateur genealogist, this article resonated:
In Defense of Amateurs

My mother and uncle (her brother) started researching our family history, and since her passing, I have picked up the mantle, and am pursuing it! My goal is to leave something here on WikiTree, built on facts and good sources, that my grandchildren can rely on and enjoy!

Bartley McRorie is a member of the Maupin Name Study Project.
Bartley McRorie is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Current Projects

Maupin Project:

I am a descendant of two different Maupin 3g grandfathers, which spurred my interest in their line. So, I am coordinating the Maupin Name Study, click here to check it out!

The ancestor of most (if not all) Maupins in America is Gabriel Maupin who left France because of religious persecution, thus he is classified as a Huguenot.

A significant addition to that project is: 3G Grandma Rhoda (Holt) Maupin's Photo Album. I am honored to have inherited this late nineteenth century photo album and am working to identify as many of the photos as possible, and to integrate the contents into our genealogical understanding of her family and times. It may be found as part of the Maupin Name Study under the heading: Maupin Treasures.

A somewhat whimsical side project is to keep track of the number of Maupin cousins who married. It was surprisingly common! As cousin marriages are discovered, they are logged on this page: Maupin Cousins Who Married.

I have noticed that some of my distant DNA cousins are Black! I would love to find out how we are related! But, African-American genealogy can be especially challenging for many reasons. So, I am helping the US Black Heritage project add profiles of black Americans into WikiTree. Many of those I work on are members of my wife's family.

As a sub-project of the Black Heritage Project, I am working to complete the addition of all 100 Voices from Digital Harrisburg to WikiTree!

What an interesting and model profile page you have! I am inspired to do some of the same notations to my 7th cousins living in Poland, Prussia, Germany who have been documenting the Wittbrodt name (paternal), and hunting down the article which is behind a paywall, at the moment, on my uncle, Kenneth Wittbrodt, mentioned in the Bay City Times. I have the reference, thanks to you:

Kenneth was mentioned in the The Bay City Times on 29 Jul 1945 in Bay City, Michigan. 1945 Newspaper: "Gridiron Gandy Dancers" Newspapers.com The Bay City Times (Bay City, Michigan, United States) 29 Jul 1945, page 3 {Newspapers.com|188786417}} (accessed 12 January 2026).

I understand there is a Wittbrodt connection via your sister and father, Chester McRorie, standing next to my uncle Kenneth in the Gandy Dancer photo in the Bay City Times.

I'm interest in making any Wittbrodt connections, and indeed I have a Wittbrodt - Wazny page going on Facebook for all Wittbrodt cousins to come and take a look at our connections to the old county (Karwia, where ggg uncles and aunts lived and fished on the Baltic Sea).

I would love to get in touch and am seeing what I can do to access the full article so I can post it on Kenneth's page as a memorial, since he died so young in a car accident.

Thank you for participating in the December 2025 USBH Connecting Challenge and helping us create 5331 profiles. We created a total of 57,417 profiles for the year through the challenge. We reached our 2025 goal of 625,000 profiles.

Hi Kay,

Yes, I am happy on the Biography Team! I have been tracking my profile improvement progress by looking at the ranking of profiles that I manage. Over 54% of my 4500+ profiles have a profile quality score of 10. And I am actively working to improve on that!

And of course that applies not only to my profiles, but any that I work to improve. I want them all to be 10s!

Hi! I ran the Relationship Finder for me & Benjamin Maupin-681 (we're cousins, but no Maupin's in my trail to the common ancestor). I married into the Shifflett name, so I ran Donnie - no relationship at all (but his tree isn't developed - I keep hoping one of his kids will take an interest. I did do one branck, to Merry Shiflett... He's not related to Maupin-681 either.)

Cheers, Liz

Hello Bartley,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or special event. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.
