John Henry Kelly was born about 1850 in County Mayo, Ireland. His parents are believed to be Bernard Kelly and Honora McLaughlin of Ireland. See Research Notes.
He was the grandfather of Grace Patricia (Kelly) de Monaco (1929-1982).[1]
He emigrated to the US in 1869.[1]
John Kelly of Rutland, Vermont, age 21, born Ireland, labourer, married Mary Ann Costello, on 20 June 1870 in Rutland, Vermont. He listed his parents as Bernard Kelly and Honora McLaughlin.[2]
In the 1875 New York state census, John Kelly (age 23, born about 1852) was living in Moriah, Essex, New York, with wife Mary Ann Kelly (20) and children Patrick (3) and Walter (1).[3]
In 1877, John Kelly, born in 1852 in Mayo, Ireland, applied for US citizenship in Rutland, Vermont. The application was supported by affadavits of Michael and Walter Castello.[4]
In the 1880 US census, John Kelly (age 30, born about 1850 in Ireland) was living in Rutland, Vermont, United States, with wife Mary A Kelly (26, born Ireland), and children Patrick (8), Walter (6), Anna (4), John (2) and Charles (5 months) (children all born in Vermont). He was working as a laborer. Also living with them was his sister Katharine Kelly (30), widow, and her children John (8), Mary Ann (7) and Bernhard (4).[5]
They had daughter Mary Agnes in 1882 in Vermont.[6]
By 1900, they had moved to Pennsylvania. In the 1900 US census, John Kelly (age 48, born Nov 1851 in Ireland) was living in Philadelphia, with wife Mary A Kelly (47), and children Annie (24), Charles (20), Mary A (18), Elizabeth (15), George (13), John (10) and Grace (7), and with father in law Walter C Castello (67). He was working as an insurance agent.[7]
In the 1910 US census, John H Kelly (age 60, born about 1850) was living in Philadelphia with wife Mary A Kelly, and children Charles, Mary, Elizabeth, George, John and Grace.[8]
John H Kelly died on 24 Feb 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He was buried at Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, United States.[9]
Research Notes
1. The death certificate for John Henry shows his father as "John" but his mother as Honora McLaughlan.[9] His wedding certificate lists his father as "Bernard" and mother again as Honora McLaughlin.[2] We have chosen to use Bernard as it was recorded by John himself and not his (probably distraught) widow. It is also in keeping with the research of Rev Vincent Kelly who was a mid 20th century researcher of this family. Note that this John as father is widely replicated on internet.
2. His birth is variously listed as: 1852 in the 1875 census and 1877 US citizenship application,[3] 1850 in the 1880 and 1910 census and gravestone,[5][8][9] Nov 1851 on the 1900 census,[7] and 29 July 1852 on his death certificate.[9]
