Biography
Asa How was born in 1767, the son of Peter Howe and Elizabeth.[1] He went by the surname "How" although later generations were known as "Howe".
Asa How "of Hopkinton" was married on 3 July 1792 to Abiah Bailey of Bradford, NH.[2] Abiah and Asa had as many as five children, based on the numbers of family members on the 1810 and 1820 censuses mentioned below. Little is known about these children, except for the following:
- Elizabeth, b. abt. 1798; m. Rufus Whitcomb, 5 Dec. 1816
By 1810, this family, like Asa's brother-in-law Moses Bailey, had moved into Washington, VT. Both families were recorded there on the 1810 census,[3] just two census lines apart. It appears that both families were quite recent arrivals in Washington, since their first mention in the town records was on 9 Apr. 1810 for Asa How and 5 Oct. 1811 for Moses Bailey, when each family was officially summoned to depart the town.[4] It was standard practice at the time for towns to seek assurance that new families could support themselves, and not rely on the support of town funds. In the case of Asa How's family, they remained in Washington for several more years, so must have been able to convince the town of their ability to make a living.
Asa's wife Abiah was recorded in Washington, VT when the 1820 census[5] was taken, at which time she was recorded with one son (16-25), one daughter (10-15) and no husband. For this reason, it is thought that Asa passed away before 1820.
