THOUGHTS: It was interesting for find that this generation of Gray/Robertson lineage was from Northern Ireland and journeyed to British America prior to the Revolutionary War. Capt Robert Gray served with George Washington at Valley Forge. His wife, Margaret Wilson was also from Ireland. Following the War, the family moved to Tennessee/Kentucky part of our country, which was quite rural and newly opened land still. Nancy's sister Elizabeth Gray married a Crockett whose sister Rebecca wa the mother of Davey Crockett.

Biography

Parents Nancy R. Gray's family came to British America prior to the Revolutionary War. The first member who made his home here was (Capt.) Robert Gray Sr, a native of North Ireland where he was raised and then married Margaret Wilson in 1769 in Ireland. She too was Irish. Capt (Rev War) Robert Sr Gray was born in 1745/1750 in North Ireland. He died in 1824 in Christian County, KY. Robert married Margaret Wilson in 1769 in North Ireland. Margaret was born in 1752 in North Ireland. She died in 1822 in East Tennessee.

Parents Voyage to British America Robert and Margaret were married about a year when they decided to take the arduous journey to what would become the United States. Their voyage predated the Revolutionary War. This journey by ocean was delayed due to bad weather conditions. So, their first child, Jane Gray, was born on the voyage. Jane was the oldest sister of Nancy R. Gray.

    • NOTE REGARDING NANCY GRAY'S FATHER CAPT ROBERT GRAY SR He came to Pennsylvania just prior to the Rev War. He was on his way to Kentucky, however the war started and he served as Captian under General George Washington at Valley Forge. The following is his Muster Roll records.

Birth of Nancy R. Gray: Nancy R. Gray was born September 12, 1801, in NC when her dad was about 56 (born 1745) and mom was abt 42 (1759). Her father died before her mom died. [1]

Probable SIBLINGS OF Nancy R. Gray:

  • 1770 Sister Jane Elizabeth Gray who was born on the voyage to British America in about 1770. Jane died in Southville, Shelby, Kentucky in 1817. Jane married one of the Hawkins brothers, Nicholas Hawkins (1758–1797). They had two known children, One, Nathan Hawkins 1786–1864 and Secondly Margaret Hawkins 1788–1850. NOTE: Nicholas Hawkins sister Rebecca Hawkins was the mother of Davy Crockett
  • 1772 Brother Robert Gray, Jr. was born abt 1772 in Virginia, British America. He died 1820 in Hopkinsville, Christian, KY.
  • 1773 Brother John Samuel Gray was born 25 Sept. 1773 in Culpeper VA. He died 1 Sept 1858 in Hopkinsville, Christian, KY. John married Hester F. Cravens in 1793 in Christian County, KY.
  • 1781 Sister Mary E. 'Molly' Gray Born 1781
  • 1782 Sister Elizabeth (Betsey) Gray born 8 Dec 1782 in Sullivan County, NC (now Tennessee). Betsey died 1861 in McLean County, Illinois. She married John Lindley and ultimately they moved to Illinois.
  • 1783 Sister Sarah Gray Born 1783
  • 1788 Brother Daniel Gray, born 1788 in TN. Married Mary (Polly) Downey. By 1833 moved to Missouri where he ultimately died.

Marriage Richard Tolliver Robertson (Jr.) married Nancy R. Gray in Hawkins, Tennessee, in 1820 when he was 26 years old. Nancy was younger than he by several years.

  • Son Robert Henry (Bob) Robeson/Robertson was born in 1822 in Hawkins, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Wilson in 1839. He then married Manerva J. McBee on October 6, 1877 & he died on April 2, 1887, in Powell Valley, Tennessee, at the age of 65.
  • Son Richard Toliver Robertson (III?). born on Feb. 27, 1827 or 1829, in Hawkins. Married Elizabeth Jane Shorter Died Jan. 25, 1904 in Claiborne County TN; buried Shoemaker Cem. CSA Civil War soldier 2 Cav. "Ashbys"
  • Son Thomas Robeson/Robertson born 1833 in Hawkins. Age 17 in 1850 Census. Married 11 March 1878 in Claiborne Co., TN to Mrs. Isaiah England (born Tabitha J. Treece, daughter of John Treece and Charity Treece known as Charty). Thomas died 1879 in Claiborne TN at abt age 46. He is buried at Shoemaker Cemetery Claiborne County TN, [2]
  • Daughter Adeline Celia (Sena) Robertson (*) who is sometimes referred to as Sarah. She was born 1836 in Hawkins. Death is unknown. [3]
  • Son James D. Robeson/Robertson was born in 1837 in Hawkins, TN. Age 13 in 1850 Census.[4] He married a Sarah LNU in or about 1856 in Claiborne TN. He died 1890 in Speedwell TN.
  • Possible Son William Robeson/Robertson born in 1838. No more known.
  • Daughter Florence Robeson/Robertson born about 1842 in Hawkins, Tennessee. [5] Died about 1936. Nothing else known.
  • Possible Daughter Cynthia Robeson/Robertson born 1845.
  • Daughter Mary Jane Robeson/Robertson was born 1848 She married Alexander Sowder.[6] Died 1924 in Claiborne County TN
