John was born in 1852 to Jeremiah G Gamble and Sarah Ann Lockaby. He was 8 when the Civil War began, and moved with his family from Alabama to Texas in 1870, the year his mother died. He lived the rest of his life in Texas, marrying Alice G Brown at age 27. John died in 1930 at 77 years old. His death certificate says he was born in 1851, but his headstone is inscribed 1852.
