INCIDENTS OF BRANT'S FORD IN OLDEN DAYS Daniel Edy Was Settler Here When Only One Cabin Existed. DROVE STAGE Son Recalls Struggles of Prof. Graham Bell to Perfect Telephone.
- LONDON. May 27. Born of United Empire Loyallet stock, Willlam J. Edy, 4 Cartwright street, may boast of an ancestry of pioneers. He is himself in his 83rd year, and has seen the progress of the province as it has been given to few men of his generation to witness. Vivid recollections of the Ontario of three-quarters of a century ago, great tracts of bush, traversed with a few roughly-hewn-out corduroy or plunk roads, are little dimmed by his occasional lapses of memory
- Not then was the farmer's life the life of comparative ease that it now is. Scythe and hand rake were the implements of harvesting, not perfected mowers and binders. Threshing was accomplished by the ald of the humble flail. And when the grain was cut, harvested and threshed upon the big barn floor, the stone quern was brought into commission, and rude flour was ground out with a rude pestle.
- IN THE WILDERNESS
- When Roswell Matthews, Mr. Edy's maternal grandfather, fled from Massachusetts in 1783, following the revolution, Upper Canada was still a wilderness. With his two brothers, Abner and Solomon, he entered the Niagara Peninsula, and made his way west to Hamilton. Beyond that village was an almost untracked forest, the only settlements being along the shores of Lake Erle.
- A small settlement had sprung up at Ancaster, about seven miles out of Hamilton, and here he built a rude log cabin to shelter his family.
- A few years later he pushed on into the bush, finally emerging on a little hill on the banks of the Grand River. Here, he felt, should be his home, and, cutting a small clearing, he built the first house in Guelph. It was 15 years later, in 1827, that John Galt and Dr. "Tiger" Dunlop founded the Royal City. During the American invasion of Canada in 1812-15, Mr. Matthews rendered yeoman service to the British forces, doing transport duties. His family, five sons and six daughters, played about in the forest surrounding the little clearing, while the father was away with the army.
- EARLY BRANTFORD
- There was but one little log cabln on the site of what is now Brantford, when Daniel Edy, Mr. Edy's father, first entered the place. With him came other settlers, and John Wilks, an Englishman, opened a distillery, where Mr. Edy found employment. Here he stayed until a flourishing little village had sprung up in the forest. The only means of ingress or egress to Western Ontario was by stage coach from Hamliton, and for years he drove the stage. Although not a particularly lucrative business, Mr. Edy managed to save a little money, and bought a farm in Burford township, near Oakland. Here William Edy was born, but before he had passed out of his enfancy, his father felt the spell of the road upon him again, and established a roadside inn on the Ancaster-Hamilton plank road, about elght miles below Brantford.
- THE FIRST TELEPHONE
- As a boy, Mr. Edy took up farming as an occupation, and owned and operated several good farms in the neighbourhood of Brantford before he eventually came to London in 1884. Among his keenest recollections of Brantford are the struggles of Prof. Graham Bell to perfect his telephone systems, and to obtain funds to continue his experiments.
