Research Notes

• The birth date seems to be 7 Aug 1797 with information on the headstone to the contrary notwithstanding.

• His parents did not marry until 1794
• The 1830 and 1840 censuses had imputed births between 1790 and 1800, which was too broad to provide any help. The 1850 census, however, shows that he was age 53 although the transcriber has interpreted it as age 59. That the former is correct can be discerned by comparing other occurences of the digits '3' and '9.' The 1860 census clearly shows his age as 63 and the transcriber interpreted it correctly. Admittedly, the 1870 census shows his age as 78, which comes close to agreeing with the headstone, so one cannot place too much faith in census records.
• In summary, the birth of the parents seems to dictate that his birth was almost certainly not in 1791. Although it is possible they married after his conception, it would likely have been before his birth or shortly thereafter. That it would have been three years after is unlikely. And, although one cannot determine facts by democratic voting, it appears that throwing out the unlikely census date of 1792 leaves us with two that claim 1797. [it is also common for many that their earlier census ages are more accurate than later dates, although no reliance is being placed on that anomaly.]
