In Memory of Mary Cooper Cox

About Mary Cooper Cox

Mary Cooper Cox started flying in 1942 under the instruction of Russ Walling, flight instructor and operations manager at Watertown Airport. She graduated with the 11th class of WASPs at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas, in April 1944. She served as an instructor at the naval base in Miami and as a test pilot at Cochran Field, Macon, GA.

In a profile, the Watertown Daily Times noted her father was the first chairman of the Watertown Airport Commission and quoted her saying “Dad told the instructor, ‘Teach my girl to fly – that’s what she always wanted to do.'”

After the war, she remained active in aviation in the Watertown area. The Watertown International Airport is proud to note its association with Ms. Cox by naming the business center in her honor.
