⁺‧₊˚ ཐི⋆♱ ch. 1 - stranger's quabble

A few hours had passed since Esher had been pulled out of his fall—at least, that was the assumption he made. He'd been staying with the same man who helped him out of the water; the man whose name he'd learned was Eleazar, and that he was a priest, and that he'd summoned Esher as a familiar. Although it was obvious that the priest expected something far different from Esher. The glances at his black, feathered wings and stubby horns and the mumbles about an "improper creature" made the man's disdain obvious. 

It was another few hours before the sun rose again, signalling the start of the next day, and what Eleazar had called Sunday. When Esher obliviously stared at the man and asked him what that meant, the priest sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Sunday is a rest day and the day I give sermons at the church," he explained, which only seemed to make Esher's curiosity and excitement grow. However, before he could even utter another word, the priest shot him a scolding glare—one Esher knew well from different eyes. "You're staying here, Ash. I can't let other people in the village see such a... creature like you." 

Esher's curious smile quickly dropped at those words, morphing into a stubborn pout. First of all, that wasn't his name. Secondly, why not?! "But-!" he attempted to protest, but that scowl quickly shut him up again. 

"No, no but. You're staying here, in the parochial house. You don't touch anything, you don't destroy anything, and the doors and curtains stay shut. End of discussion." Esher watched as the man shrugged his coat on and ran one last hand through his dirty blond hair. "I'll be back in an hour." The door shut behind the priest, leaving Esher completely alone.

He tried to behave and stay put, okay? He'd wandered through every room, trying to figure out human technology—especially the weird dusty box in front of the couch. He heard it make noises before, but he wasn't sure how to make it do it again. He failed to activate the box, much to Esher’s annoyance. After a good twenty minutes, he was bored out of his mind. He made his way into the kitchen, curious as to what kind of appetite this priest had, only to find most of the cabinets (and the weirdly chilly one) mostly empty. Strange, since he'd learned humans need lots of nutritious foods to stay alive and healthy. What did pique his interest, though, was the sound that came muffled through the white, lacey curtains above the counter. It sounded high-pitched, warm. It sounded like laughter; children, he assumed. That's what he was taught children sound like. And as good as Esher tried to behave, curiosity kills. He glanced back at the empty house one last time before opening the window and climbing out.
