Outcasts and mental health

One thing I just realized while rewatching the series is that methods of help or treatment always came from a "normie" directed at an "Outcast"… So far, we haven't seen any Outcasts trained in psychology, for instance, who would actually know how to handle these unique traits.

Take the situation with Ophelia and Francoise: both were labeled crazy or dangerous and sent to an institution run by normies, where they consequently became test subjects for experiments or simply vanished. This happened even though Morticia had warned her mother that she suspected the issue was psychic in nature, not psychological.

The situation with Francoise and Tyler is similar; both were deemed too dangerous and locked away. Even though the doctor was genuinely trying to help Tyler, I don't think she had the necessary expertise.

A side note on the conversation between Wednesday and Judi regarding Dr. Fairburn’s book (Unlocking the Outcast Mind): Wednesday questions whether Fairburn is an Outcast, and Judi counters by asking why she would need to be one.

My point is that, even if she is an ally who has studied the needs of Outcasts, Wednesday’s question is valid. Like it or not, these unique traits are often labeled as symptoms requiring correction or treatment. Fairburn wanted to separate the Hyde from its master to see if that would free it, when in reality, it was a death sentence. I wonder if she had access to Laurel’s research, just as Wednesday did.

Xavier’s therapy with Dr. Kinbott was supposedly helping him, but I don’t think that was quite the case. After what Xavier said—citing his father’s advice—I had convinced myself that visions could be uncertain or unreliable, but here’s the thing: they were actually spot-on.

Xavier would illustrate the Hyde, the events surrounding it, the locations, and the victims, even without context. It was the same with Wednesday; aside from the vision of Enid’s supposed death—where the outcome was uncertain—her other visions were very clear, whether they concerned the past, present, or future.

So, following the logic of a mental health issue fueled by depression, anxiety, or something similar, Kinbott might have led Xavier to believe his visions were influenced by his mindset, his surroundings, or his emotions. In reality, however, they were driven by the specific nature of his psychic ability—which is fated to produce visions of negative events.

As for Isaac, he wanted a "cure" for his sister’s condition because she viewed her power as a curse and a burden, so I wouldn't count that as a form of treatment.

Capri said she believes music heals where medicine fails—perhaps a hint at a treatment that actually works for Outcasts? After all, Wednesday asked if any patient had ever left Willow Hill after successful rehabilitation, and we know the answer is no.

I believe the next season will delve deeper into mental health and highlight the negligence regarding the care of Outcasts.

We’ve already seen:

Excessive transformations that shorten life expectancy.

Overuse of telekinesis that messes with the user's mind.

Black tears and seizures resulting from forced visions.

All of these are side effects of overusing their abilities.

Will we see qualified people providing successful treatments? Or better yet, proper mentors?

Aside from Capri with Enid and Morticia with Wednesday, have there been any other examples of mentorship between Outcasts of the same type? I mean someone older and experienced offering advice and guidance. I know there were brief glimpses here and there.

What do you think?

every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.

Every Sith Lord, bounty hunter, and just general villain: I was hoping for Kenobi. Every Jedi Who Has To Deal With This Shit: [deep sigh] Yeah we know. I need you to know I hyena laughed about this for FIVE STRAIGHT MINUTES, Quinlan's life is so hard, he's so much cooler and more exciting than Obi-Wan and this is still the response he gets?? HE WAS IN THAT FIGHT, TOO, YOU KNOW.

Big fan of characters realizing they don't get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they'd never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain't. You're just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.

I've told this story before, but one time when we were on a panel, Tim Zahn said that killing a character is always easier (because, at the very least, you literally do not have to write them anymore), so if you're not sure you need to do it, make them live.

usb drives you find lying on the ground are modern day cursed amulets

just over a decade ago, i was a student at a big state university and i worked at a computer lab on campus. and people would leave flash drives there every fuckin day we're talkin like dozens of flash drives a week. and what's really wild to me is that they generally would NEVER come back and ask for their flash drive. like, maybe 1 in a 100 came to the desk and asked for their flash drive back so we'd just have boxes and boxes of flash drives. hundreds of them. and let me tell you, people would leave all sorts of crazy shit on those (it was my job to check). mostly homework of course but also, like, entire music and movie collections, games, personal photos, extremely personal photos, and, like, tax documents. do u know how many times i found a flash drive with someone's complete tax return and academic record on it? with like their social security number and everything? it's a good thing i'm not into identity theft because working there was easy mode. anyway about once a month i'd wipe all the drives less than 256MB in size, load em up with furry porn, and leave them around parties like easter eggs

ugh we need more manipulative characters that aren’t evil. lie and cheat and steal for a good cause. control every narrative. use narcissism for justice. ruin all of your personal relationships for the good of the mission.
