Victoria was born in 1990, and she is a P. t. hybrid like most of the chimps here at Twycross Zoo. Having mixed regional roots means they are hybrids. Do zoos still breed hybrid chimpanzees? Not anymore. Today, modern zoos use DNA testing to keep the different subspecies pure, which helps preserve their natural diversity. However, a smaller pool of pure chimpanzees makes pairing them up incredibly hard. Zoos must be precise with genetics now, creating a massive puzzle for conservation. Only Josie is a P. t. verus, a pure Western Chimpanzee at Twycross Zoo, but unfortunately, she is getting too old to breed now I believe. Jambo is also a P. t. hybrid.
