(also i canโ€™t help but giggle at the idea of Mr. Burns sitting around Smithersโ€™s apartment watching TV in his underwear XD)

no you don't understand. I can't write the scene yet. I must daydream about it morning and night for at least a week before it can be written. Like a fine wine, it has to age

I compare these two scenes when trying to explain why the early episodes feel different than modern episodes. Characters were allowed to feel without it being turned into a joke. Early seasons touched the heart in a way modern seasons don't.

I enjoy some modern episodes, some are good, and make you feel, but it's not the same and I don't think it ever will be.

@gaboomedina esto es como que lo hablรกbamos, un pocoโ€ฆ?

things you can say instead of "I'm bad at writing" or "my writing sucks"

What's wrong with saying those things? First of all, you're insulting yourself and you don't deserve that โค๏ธ Second of all, those statements aren't going to get you any kind of reassurance in response. The only thing anyone can really say is "no, you're/it's not" - and that will almost certainly just sound patronizing to you when you're in a funk.

Focus in on your actual feelings and thoughts instead of dumping it all under the umbrella of "bad." Even if you're only talking to yourself, you'll get a better understanding of what's actually happening and a more realistic impression of yourself and your work.

  • I'm not satisfied with how this story turned out.
  • I feel like the ending is kind of weak on this one.
  • I'm feeling really uncertain about my characterization in this story
  • Is this plot too simple? I'm worried no one will bother reading it.
  • Is this plot too complex? I'm worried it's meandering and that my readers will get lost or bored.
  • Reading my own story doesn't give me the same sense of awe that I feel when I read [another author]'s story.
  • I don't think I achieved what I was aiming for with this story.
  • I'm worried no one will like this story, so I want to tear it down preemptively before anyone else can do so.
  • I'm worried I'm going to disappoint the people who liked [another story I wrote]
  • This story is really difficult to write. It's so much harder than I thought it would be / than my last story was!
  • I don't seem to write stories in the same way or with the same speed or length as other writers.
  • I feel like no one pays attention to my writing.

Feel free to add more examples in the notes. And please remember that you don't suck at writing and your writing isn't bad. You're just being your own harshest critic. โค๏ธ

Too often, there's this idea that you have to hate a thing to see it accurately, and that if you don't hate what you make, you can't improve. This is, quite simply, wrong. It's true that if you think something you make is PERFECT, then you're unlikely to improve; however, there is a vast VAST span between "it's perfect" and "it's garbage". Don't get trapped by false dichotomy.

Beyond that, and even without considering its harmful effects on you, "this is garbage" can't help you improve because it doesn't say what's actually wrong. And "everything's wrong with it" is factually incorrect; for something to register as even a very poorly-done story, it still needs to register as a STORY, which means you successfully put words together in a manner that can be parsed. If a character's choice of action doesn't make sense, then that means you'd constructed a narrative where it's possible for a choice of action to make sense.

When you've identified the biggest problem, or the one that annoys you the most, then you can work on fixing it; but that requires IDENTIFYING a problem, which "the whole thing sucks" does NOT do.

One other thing I'll note, though. Sometimes you don't have the energy to go through a thing and figure out exactly WHAT is wrong with it; that's okay. You don't have to have everything figured out immediately; or ever, necessarily, if you decide to move on to something different. It's not like your options are limited to thinking "the whole thing sucks" or "there's an issue with X, Y, and Z, and I know exactly how to go about fixing it"; sometimes the accurate answer is "I don't like how this turned out but I don't know what the problem is", or "this turned out in such a way that I don't want to think about it again". Uncertainty is part of the human condition; so is embarrassment. You're not "uniquely incapable" when you experience something that all of us are prone to.

Fun Fact #1: I studied aquatic entomology in college, so I'm knowledgeable (and fond) of insects. My dream job would be in the field of entomology, but for now I just look them up on the internet and draw them. Here are some bug versions of a couple Simpsons lads along with three reasons I chose that insect for them.

Fun Fact #2: If you ever want to come up with wardrobe ideas for Moe, all you need to do is go to a random episode of On Cinema at the Cinema and pick any random Gregg Turkington fit. It has a 100% success rate so far.

let this be the year that you stop using your school (or employer) email address for your AO3 account

  • when you leave school or leave a job, you lose that email address. This means not only that youโ€™ll lose any emails you have saved on that address but that you might lose your ability to access AO3. When you try to reset your password or recover your account, messages are sent to the email address on file.
  • your school or employer might block emails based on words contained in those emails. that means you might miss subscription notifications, comment notifications, or emails from the Policy & Abuse team trying to contact you. These messages wonโ€™t go to spam. Theyโ€™ll just be outright blocked. You will never see them.
  • your school/work systems administrator has the ability to access and read your emails (not that they necessarily would, but they have that power)
  • if youโ€™re still in high school, itโ€™s possible that the schoolโ€™s Acceptable Use Policy (similar to a Terms of Service) would allow your parents or legal guardian to access your emails, upon request
  • school and work email addresses often use some form of your real, legal name which you may or may not want connected to your fannish identity.

As you can see, creating a free email account with a different provider is probably a good idea for a lot of reasons unrelated to AO3, too. It might seem annoying, but itโ€™s worth it.ย

If you need instructions for how to change your accountโ€™s email address, here you go!
