MY LIFETIME, HIS TRAINING.

@bpdgrayson / bpdgrayson.tumblr.com

all i have now is what he gave me. ( kav, he/him, 20+ )

it is kinda baffling to me the number of times i've met an american tgirl and went hours chatting without her asking a single question about where i live. why do i need to entertain your take on the hierarchy between in-n-out vs five guys vs wendy's or whether the deli in your state's biggest grocery store chain is better than your ex's state, if you aren't gonna like, make a single comment about the island i grew up in, after i spell it out for you and link the wikipedia page, after i explain a little of how distinct it is from são paulo (most populous city in the western hemisphere, never heard of it, not interested in learning) and the gay scene there, how DIY works in my country, cause you'd rather go back to arguing about whether chicago is better than seattle or how distinct east coast trannies are from west coast trannies (exactly the same). extremely impressionable, piss poor conversationalists. happy 4th of july

this post keeps getting notes from people missing the forest for the trees. i don't want you to ask me those questions, those are just examples. i am not asking you, american reader, to be performatively friendly towards random foreigners you encounter online (e.g. me). more pertinently, leaving a comment/tag on someone's post you've never interacted with before is not the dynamic i am describing, it is not an earnest attempt at getting to know someone, and i have no incentive to respond.

i am asking you to think about how to have a conversation with someone you *actually* want to converse with, how to indulge a non-american on subjects that aren't premised on in-depth knowledge of your country and allow room for personal opinion. i am suggesting that if you find yourself regularly in touch with someone from e.g. Santiago, and you choose to pursue friendship with that person, you are able to do a cursory amount of research on your own to reciprocate the questions they're asking you about e.g. life in Olympia; that you demonstrate a degree of actual investment in their perspective, you know, the way you would talk to a real person, without explicitly reducing them to just a Chilean or someone slightly more ignorant about the PNW's music scene than your average American—which makes you seem interesting and thoughtful in turn, and makes them more likely to want to talk to you more often.

every single non-american, and specially ESL speakers, put a ton of effort into learning about shit no one outside of the US has any reason to care about, solely because existing in online anglophone spaces means interacting with americans, and if you are actively pursuing friendship with one such person you should at least try to match their investment.

that's the thing that bothers me. ime americans broadly excel at acting friendly—they are disproportionately bad at keeping a conversation going unless it revolves around their culture, and it makes it so that i very rarely meet an american i wanna talk to more than once a week

your thoughts on Dick Grayson? I haven't seen you talk much about them on here/j

he should get tortured and killed and they should flog him and then put him through medieval torture and then he should get hit with a rent raise and all his food goes spoilt and his tap is leaking and he stubs his toe. yes I like him!

will never question the idea that batman is a fundamentally hopeful character when something that is central to so many of his stories is him either accepting for himself or inspiring others to see that they are more than their past traumas and that they have the ability to do or be better (and even directly providing them with the resources and support to do this)

roy harper one day you will be forty-five and nothing you did or said in your young adulthood will matter, one day you will not be defined by your worst mistakes, roy harper one day no one will leave you because you’ve made yourself a warm home to return to, one day healing won’t be a painful, clawing journey but a well worn path that you carved through hell, roy harper one day I promise you will be fine

Rose. Rose I understand you're going through a lot right now but nobody wants to listen to you trauma dumping. Yes- yeah, I know. I know. But I'm trying to move on. I'm establishing a boundary with you that you're not allowed to bring any of that up anymore. And I did remember your birthday this year. Don't gaslight me

Martian vision's on the fritz, but I think you're ready for something better... DESPER-OVISION. See existence for the painful empty thing it really is! See people's true colours-- BLUE! Comprehend the sinister meaning behind every seemingly innocuous statement or action!
