Attention to the Zukka fandom!
Let's no do "Pocahontas" AUs or use the Disney movie for Zuko x Sokka comparisons/stories because the Disney movie white-washed the very real capture and torment of Mataoka. She was one of the first cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. She was only 10 years old when John Smith first arrived.
Theirs is not a love story.
She was taken captive, separated from her husband and son because the colonists threatened to kill her if her father, the Chief (Powahatan) fought back against their advances. She was taken to England against her will, forced to convert into Christianity, and had her name changed as well. She was likely assaulted by John Rolfe and gave birth to his son at the young age of 17.
She was paraded around in England as a "civilized savage" and died at just 20-21 years old, buried far away from her home.
Don't disrespect the story of a very real indigenous girl for a fictional character and ship. It's a disservice to Mataoka and the Powhatan people's struggles.
mycroft during this dinner scene is so heartbreaking and interesting to me. he is acutely, physically distressed here, and particularly in these moments we see him flinching when silas and sherlock begin to get physical. it speaks volumes about his own childhood and they are not happy ones.
