TOXICITY DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY EQUAL COMPLEXITY!!!!!! TAKE YOUR OWN CRITICISM AND ACTUALLY INVEST TIME AND EFFORT IN DOING ACTUAL LITERARY ANALYSIS!!!
I'm really glad you put this into words? I've been thinking this about some of my other toxic yaoi ships lately.
The thing that differentiates a well written taboo element from an ill written one for me personally is a level of honestly. Where there is no pretense within the narrative (not within the characters lmao) about the weight of the actions. And you can gloss over the actions within proportion to the genre its a delicate balance between getting it right and seeming out of touch, its subjective but I think most people are able to agree on when things and tropes are rolled together to be "dark" or "shocking" and when things are put in a story with a clear purpose. Haven't seen the iwtv show so can't be the judge of that but op's criticism definitely applies to a lot of other media.
For example when there's non-con elements in any ship toxic/dark or not its stops being a ship and lowkey starts being horror or like sleazy. Like I can no longer even suspend my disbelief to defend/rationalize/enjoy the same. For smut maybe I can stomach nc elements but how am K supposed to root for a romance lead like that? Idk im rambling

There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving toxic characters but there is with trying to erase their toxicity and replace it was the idea that they did nothing wrong.
