The “new” Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro was re-inaugurated on 2 June 2013 with a match between Brazil and England. The famous stadium, that had hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup, was given a total face lift in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics, one of a handful of stadiums to host both. Brazil played Panama at the stadium on Sunday, winning 6-2, before heading off for the World Cup.

As the London Wine Fair gets underway, Olympia London, has confirmed the opening dates for its two hotels, citizenM London Olympia and Hyatt Regency London Olympia. citizenM’s fifth London hotel will open in ‘early summer’, while the Hyatt will debut on July 6. Both hotels form part of the new-look Olympia exhibition centre.

Tonight the Embassies of Portugal and Brazil will be marking Portuguese Language Day (5 May) with a reception at the Portuguese Embassy in Belgrave Square. It will be a celebration of the rich linguistic and cultural heritage shared across the Lusophone world, and especially between Portugal and Brazil.
