New Zealand’s finest is taking the first steps towards a more circular future.
We are piloting a new returnable bottle and crate system, bringing your favourite beer to a 12x 330ml swappa crate designed to be returned again and again.
The pilot is helping us learn how New Zealanders use returnables so we can build the infrastructure needed to move towards a more circular bottle reuse system.
To protect this incredible place we get to call home, we know we need to change how we use resources. That’s why we’re reinventing the iconic swappa crate – with Steinlager Returnables.
A returnable crate, made for today.
We’re running our trial across 48 Super Liquor stores across Auckland, from Wellsford to Pukekohe. And with your support, we can prove the case for reusable bottles and crates, with the plan to take them nationwide.

A returnable crate, made for today.
We’re running a trial across 46 Super Liquor stores across Auckland, from Warkworth to Pukekohe. And with your support, we can prove the case for reusable bottles and crates, with the plan to take them nationwide.
By picking up a crate of returnables, you’ll save money, cut waste, lower emissions, and support a circular future – all while enjoying one of New Zealand’s Finest beers.
It’s our deposit free pilot programme where you can enjoy Steinlager Classic in returnable bottles and reusable crates, then return the empties when you’re finished. Every return helps us fine-tune the programme and build a new fit-for-purpose circular beer bottle and crate system.
Simple as:
Every crate has a barcode, so we can keep track- no deposit, no stress.
There’s no deposit or upfront cost. You just borrow the crate and bring it back when you’re done. Easy.
You can borrow up to two (2) crates at a time- that keeps it fair for everyone keen to get involved.
We recommend returning your crate within two to three weeks to help keep the cycle flowing smoothly.
Please return your empty bottles in the crate they came in.
Returning full crates helps us understand how people use the system in the real world and ensures we’re ready for the next phase of the programme.
As this is a new routine, we know the occasional bottle may end up in your recycling bin—and that’s okay. During the trial, the most important thing is returning your crate. Every return helps us improve the system and shape the future of Returnables.
To any participating Super Liquor store in Auckland during the trial. Just scan your crate at checkout, drop it off, and you’re good to go.
No stress- you won’t be charged. But returning helps us keep the system circular and sustainable. Plus, you’ll go in the draw for monthly rewards.
Not yet.
This pilot is designed to help us understand how people use and return the system before we invest further in the infrastructure needed to support bottle reuse.
During the trial, the crates are cleaned and reused, while the bottles are recycled through New Zealand’s existing recycling system.
Our aim is to introduce bottle reuse as the next phase of the programme once we’ve gathered real-world insights and upgraded our washing facilities. Taking this staged approach helps us build a returnable system that’s practical, scalable and designed to last.
Reusable bottles are nothing new. In fact, Swappa crates have been circulating around New Zealand for more than 100 years. Sometimes the old way really is the best way – we’ve simply given it a refresh with a 330ml bottle.
Don’t worry, ABC Swappa Crates are still here – you’ll continue to find them as usual alongside this pilot.
Bottle reuse requires specialised washing, sorting and quality assurance systems.
Before investing in that infrastructure, we’re using this pilot to better understand customer behaviour and ensure the returnable system works as intended.
Starting with crate reuse and bottle recycling allows us to gather the insights needed to confidently expand the programme and move towards bottle reuse in the future.
The Steinlager Returnables programme is a limited trial operated by Lion NZ Limited (‘Lion’) under the Steinlager brand. The aim is to test a circular, deposit-free system for Steinlager 330 ml × 12 bottles and crates.
Open to New Zealand residents aged 18 years and over. Participation is voluntary and free. By taking part, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.
No deposit is required. Each participant may borrow up to two (2) crates at a time. When borrowing, provide your name and mobile number to record your borrow. Crates remain the property of Lion NZ Limited.
Return to any participating store within 2–3 weeks if possible. Scan your crate at the kiosk or hand to store staff to complete return. No penalty for non-return, but ongoing participation may be restricted for overdue crates.
Every return = automatic entry into the monthly draw. Prizes vary monthly and aren’t transferable or redeemable for cash. Winners will be notified via the mobile number provided. Lion’s decision is final.
