Germany is a Smash region that encompasses the country of the same name and consists of sixteen states. It is located in Central Europe, bordering Denmark to the north, Poland to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands to the west. Due to its proximity to Austria and Luxembourg especially, as well as all three countries adopting German as its national primary language, Germany's scene often crosses over with those regions. Tournament activity primarily takes place in West Germany (consisting of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland) and North Germany (consisting of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, and Thuringia), though South Germany (consisting of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria) also features a notable scene.
Germany is often considered one of the strongest Smash regions in Europe, owing to a long legacy of notable players that have even been ranked globally. The first German player to gain a national spotlight was Ice, who was one of Europe's best Melee players throughout the 2010s and a regular on the SSBMRank and MPGR up until his retirement. The decade eventually saw the rise of many other prominent German players, including quiK in Brawl and cyve and Sodrek in Smash 4, all of whom would rank globally in their respective games; quiK especially has remained one of Europe's best players across three different Smash titles. This trend remained in the following decade, which saw the meteoric rise of Nicki into the top echelon of competitive play in Melee and Germany establishing itself as one of Europe's largest Ultimate regions, with players such as quiK and Tarik often performing well at Europe's largest events.
